can anyone make me driveshafts?

one trick i've seen if you need to make your own custom shafts is to chop the 2 sections you want mating together to the correct lengths. Then put a chamfer on each end & put the 2 bits in the V bit of a length of angle iron and hold in place with g-clamps.

Then slowly build up the weld joining the 2 sections together, rotating it as you go.

Another tip is to join the sections close to one end or the other rather than in the middle as that way you minimise being out of true and introducing vibrations

They would need to be of the same diameter for that to work.

Plenty of trike's have half shafts that have been shortened by cutting and sleeving. Whether I'd want that on a car is another thing

The second shaft I welded up i had the Honda part turned down to the same diameter as the ford one, I ground both shafts to a point then clamped them in a piece of angle and did that one slowly. As yet I have not fitted that one so im not sure if its better.

I will try it though just to see if it is better and if it is im going to do the same to the first one I made which was not clamped as well during welding.

I was told in no uncertain terms the spending of funds was not on the cards so it looks like I have to make the welded ones work

Wouldn't mind the number myself if his work's up to scratch, I can't use welded shafts, they snap, so have to have custom ones every time!

is it the shock loadings you get on the buggy that kills welded shafts phill? as the shafts on the V6 converted pugs are mostly welded and cope with 200 lbft just fine.

they are a little easier to sort being hollow though.

Big tyres + shock = snap.

The shafts we run are actually much more akin to the torsion bars in the back of the ZX, they twist around a lot and take the shock loadings out of the drivetrain.
I need two new shafts 'cause I'm making the rear arms wider this summer so if he's good I'll be giving him a ring!
