Can anyone identify this bench drill?

Hi all.

Picked up this bench drill on ebay for a tenner last week. Bargain. It was pictured without a motor and no mention of it in the description, but it actually came with one I'm wondering what it is. It looks like it could be related to a progress no. 1, although that's purely down to a similarity I spotted doing an image search. It's got no lid or handle, but I'll come up with something. The motor wasn't wired in either so I've just wired it in to a plug directly just to test it. It's got a startet isolator. That's the only making I can find. Weighs a fair bit, and it's got a t-slotted base but very plain drilling table with just a single hole in the middle. Does anyone recognise it?

Doesn't look like a Progress No1, the motor mount is different and the angle of the rear of the base is sharper.

Try looking at Fobco's, I understand the Progress was a near copy.

Hard to tell, could even be a small Meddings!

its a churchill same as mine made by elliot i milled fastening slots in mine . dont ask if u can still buy spares for them or instruction manual ive had mine 40 years and it was about over 20 years old then

Ah thank you Brightspark (and everyone else) Nice looking thing! I guess you've drilled the table? What kind of mounting does the spindle use? Also, the -thing- you've got clamped to the pillar above the table, you can probably see that I've got the same device loose on the base. I'll need to take the head off to attach it, but I'm not sure what it is and if it could be any use? Time to sleep in any case Thanks again. Tom.

Tom.[/quote its just a small table that i sit the chuck key on . the spindle has a jacobs taper on the end and fits directly on to the chuck so cant be removed to use with morse taper drills ect

The loose bit is a small mobile shelf for chuck keys, drill bits and assorted rubbish, my Grafton has one as well.

It'd be nice if the JT is the same as the keyless chuck I bought recently. I purchased it for my mill but found it was too big and the only thing I could conveniently drill was the milling table. It came with an MT2 w/drawbar and JT arbor. I've used it on my lathe since but it'd go nicely on this drill I'd probably be able to repurpose the arbor easily enough. I had thought my miller would be a good driller when I bought it. It weighs 700kg, but actually has fairly limited capacity in the z axis. I'm pretty chuffed to finally get a good drilling machine in any case, and for a steal

Actually looking at this on a pc, and not a phone, I've just noticed you (Brightspark) mentioning the milled t-slots already, and even pictured them - haha. I'll have to get some t-slot millers and see what I can do with the table. Perhaps it was made for a time where people just held stuff under the drill? I wonder how many fingers my machine has claimed in its history!

the slots are milled right through the top table as its not thick enough for t slots . the slots clear the srengthening webs underneath as well
