Can any one identify this chain saw ?

I need to buy some parts as the bore and piston is shaged

But as its old the part numbers and model number have worn off there are some pointers to what it is But I know we have meny on here that know there stuff and hord stuff as well

Any one help out identifying the model ? Is a husqvarna I know that but only have a couple other identifying bits

Looks like a seven on the end of the damaged transfer, I would go with xp 357. My favourite small saw

They can handle a big bar, look after that saw, they are a real gem.

Actually its only a 18 inch I just measured it

Looks bigger and ulits heavy as well

I only ever used it once before it died cut like butter through trees


Just looked on line only a 47mm head ?


Work changed the head and piston they know what there doing but it only worked for 20 mins after and it got dumped back in the workshop as a job for later but its not been got round to and I could do with it for jibs I'm doing so brought it home to play with on taking apart the piston and rings are knackard I don't know how ?

I'm hoping one of the head bolts where a bit loose I think I found this on playing with it so hoping it was an over site when refitting and was running lean as to much air ?


So for the sake of 40 quidish for a patern part and a couple hours on a Sunday morning with coffee might resurrect it ?

Look under the handle on the clutch side, there's a black tag with model and serial no. On it. It's either a 257 or 357xp.

You'd be better putting genuine parts on it or a meteor piston kit the old XP's are much sought after saw and pretty much bombproof when looked after properly . A lot of old timers don't like the newer auto tune ( electricery ) XP's , well worth putting a bit of money in it .

It's probably a 357xp (46mm bore) but may have had a 359 cylinder kit (47mm bore) fitted, both will fit.

Cylinder kits manufactured by Hyway or Meteor are the best apart from oem parts.

If it died after 20 mins run time, it may have an air leak causing fuel mixture problems (crank seals or bad gaskets), if you decide to pass it on, I would be interested.....

Can you find a serial number ? If so email Husqvarna quoting the number and ask them to confirm the model

Model number will be on the black plate behind the top handle...

Ps. Just looked close up at the serial no plate its a 357xp, so should have crankshaft stuffers fitted, which might make separating the case halves difficult...

Still interested if you sell...

Did a quick read and appears common to swap the rubber carb boot to prevent air leaks.
I have a 52cc auger where it had an air leak and ruined the piston but still runs fine after cleaning up.

I'd check the name plate.
Husqvarna,McCulloch and jonsered have a small metal tag riveted somewhere , with model, series number,date and location of production.
I think it's the same saw you mentioned , surely a 300 series judging from the brake and clutch cover .
I think they skipped the 400's (I don't know any saw of this series I might be wrong) because the 500's have the clutch cover in like an antracite grey colour .

My jonsered had an air leak through the crank seal on the clutch side , I've rebuild it but then dropped and smashed the oil tank .
I'm going to buy a new saw in the 50 60cc range.
I'm considering a Stihl Ms 361 or an Husqvarna 265
