Can any one help

I've had a pair of hard brass half nuts made for my antique Sphere 1943 lathe ( it's almost identical to an Atlas F10 but not quite ).

The old half nuts were threaded with 3/6 UNF holes to take pins that helped move the nuts open & closed .
The new half nuts have been made with the American 10-24 tpi ( 3/16 x 24tipi UNC )

These threads take a 1/2" of thread and require a half inch of unthreaded rod to slip into the half nut operating lever holes /

Do any of you have such beasts or are willing to make me a pair for beer tokens in a reasonable grade steel not M/S

Please could you clarify that you need two "pins that help... move the nuts open & closed". Specifically, you do _not_ need half nuts.

So 3/16" diameter, 1" overall length, 1/2" threaded 10-24 UNC. Two pieces thereof. Any screwdriver slot to install or molegrips?

Two of these threaded pins are required in 10-24tpi UNC .

The originals made approx 1943 shown above are UNF , the new halfnuts have been tapped with UNC

I might have it sorted out after sitting at the keyboard into the late Deadman's hours.
I found on searching all of the " Spalding fasteners " web site page by page ......2 inch long hex cap head bolts 10-24tpi UNC , the picture of them shows a thread with a bit of shank which I can cut to size and pop a screwdriver slot in the end with my Dremel cost £6. 97 inc P&P .

I've got a few 10-24 NC socket head cap screws. Three of them have 1/2" of thread, and four have 5/8" of thread. You are welcome to have them. For overall length, add 1/4" to the screw.

Edit: Ahh, its late, and I just double checked and see that you need part of the screws to be an unthreaded shank. Still, they are yours if you can use them ?

Thanks Mike , they are not needed . You have given the reason .
I have two fully threaded hex capped 10-24 UNC machine screws with one inch of thread.
Whilst they fit perfectly I don't want to use then as the screw thread that protrudes will fret/rub/wear the brass half nuts giving a sloppy engagement that might also make the engagement on the lead screw a tiny bit late .

The slotted head screwdriver type were used before the advent of modern socket head set screws, so, could you use them instead ?

No the head will not engage in the locating slots in as it is 0.3 " the shaft bit shown in the picture is 0.187mm , Even if I could turn the head down there will be no meat left on the pin end as the Allen key fitting the cap is 4.5 mm ( 0.177inch

I can't turn anything down as my lathe is in bits ........ stripped to fit the new half nuts . I'll wait to see what the postman brings Monday or Tuesday before I splash any more cash on sorting things .

Without being morbid, how many days do you think you have left on this earth? And how many times each and every one of those days would you need to operate those half nuts in order to produce any discernable wear? Unless you are screwing for Wales on a commercial basis, your fears may be over-stated.

Bung up the threads with JB Weld and sand smooth.

I aim to be the worlds oldest man who safely plays on his lathe when he is 103yrs old either that or I'll die trying .

29 years to go and lots of threads to make as well as use the auto feed left & right , for my hands don't work so well these days ..waiting an op for trigger fingers on both hands ,,,have waited four years already ... This is Labours Wales for you .

I have already thought about liquid metal thread filling as a last resort . I've already got some alumiumised super epoxy two tube pack left over from a repair job a few months ago

I have a Sphere lathe and as you say almost identical to the Atlas 10F. I also have two Atlas 10F lathes and I'm playing mixup to get my lathe fully working. I think the saddles are identical, the difference seems to be mostly in the headstock and only really in the casting but it's an interesting project

Two of these little beauties' came in the post this afternoon to fit into the new half nuts .on my lathe .....from Spalding nuts & bolts....had to do a three hour or so trawl of their website products to find them .. Cost just under £7 inc P&P .
They'll need a bit of careful fettling to get them the same thread length & overall size as the 10-32 pins on the original half nuts .
