Can a Hilti 22V drill from Dewalt 18V battery

As per title

I have a hilti 22V drill that is 12yrs old, its working perfectly however the batteries have gone weak with age and use.

My newer power tools are Dewalt 18V

I reckon thats worth a try....I use my 18v DeWalt batteries to power my Dyson with an adapter....the Dyson motor I think is 22v and works fine.

there is batterys for yours but if your charger isnt lithium you need a charger

Should work I reckon. I've a 24V Bosch SDS I need to design a converter for to run on an 18V Makita battery. People say it works.

Yet another unstarted project let alone unfinished!

The lithium-ion battery for an "18v" cordless tool will have 5 cells in series ( 5S), whereas the Hilti "22v" tools - and the Dyson vac - are 6S. The nominal voltage of each cell can be quoted as 3.6 or 3.7 volts, and fully-charged 4.0 or 4.1, so depending on which number the tool manufacturer chooses, they may be described as "18v" (e.g. DeWalt ) or "20v" ( Parkside ), and "22v" ( Hilti ) or "22.6v" or "24v".

Running a Hilti tool from a battery with one cell less via a mating adapter will work OK, just a bit slower. The battery will be charged from its "own" charger.
In the case of the Bosch GBH 24 VRE SDS drill, the original batteries are NiCd or NiMH. Again, 18v Makita batteries will run it slower, and will have to be removed from the adapter and charged on a Makita Li-Ion charger.

Im ok with the drill turning slower, will it have any torque

Should we say "sets of five cells in series, that are then paralleled"? The above could be (mis-)read as the battery only containing five cells in total.

Could you speak a little on any current draw (amps) implication of the battery substitution? Would it draw more current because of the lower voltage in order to maintain the power?

Is is a drill driver or SDS? On an SDS, the safety clutch is what limits the torque.

I've checked these things on various tools and various makes using fly lead and tape. You have to be a bit careful not to short anything but once the concept is proven it's easy enough to use adaptors.

Panasonic circular saw, Dyson handheld, Makit Nicad drill running off Makita or Aldi batteries. All 18V or close to.

Added: Neither of the Makita fitment batteries are genuine, both unknown and unlabeled. One of them is now in a replacement case, it was damaged when I got it.

The Dyson runs fine on regular 18v but I use the 18v/54v flex ones as they are a lot bigger.

I also use the 18v/54v flex on my strimmer...just saves having to swap out batteries.

Yes, I should have said that depending on the Ampere-hour capacity of the battery, the 5S or 6S serial string may consist of groups of 2 or 3 or more paralleled cells. The paralleling of cells is done before the serial connections, so a 5AH 18 volt battery would be described as "2P5S" and a 6AH may be "3P5S". For a "22 volt" 6AH battery there may be 3 layers of 2AH cells, spot-welded in parallel and laid head-to-toe so that 6 sets can be wired in series, making a "3P6S" battery.

As for current draw and torque, the torque of a DC motor is proportional to the armature current. Since voltage "pushes" the current, with 4 volts less the Hilti 22v tool will be weaker and slower if running on 18 volts.

You need to be careful using dewalt batteries to power other tools. The protection circuit is in the tool and not the battery so you can completely drain the battery and render it useless by using it in a tool other than a genuine dewalt.

A mate used his dewalt battery to run a non genuine dewalt tool. He drained the battery completely flat. I tried to rescue the battery but 3 out of the 5 cells are not holding a charge. I will have to rebuild it using new cells.
