Camper ceiling material

Hi guys,

I’m about to do the inside roof on my camper. It’s already lined with 6mm ply but I’d like to paint it then run some slats front to back.

I’ve seen some 6mm x 44mm x 2400mm pine PSE stripwood in Wickes for £7 per 2.4 strip and I reckon I’ll need probably 15 strips. I was just wondered if anyone knows anywhere cheaper thank Wickes for that sort of timber or has any other ideas for a cheap material to use (and that doesn’t weigh a ton as van is already quite overweight)

I feel the price of timber has just gone ridiculous the last couple of years. I went to buy a sheet of Beech ply the other day and it was £100 ‍

I was going to suggest lining it with this, and be done with it...

Morland’s 3mm Plywood with a White Linen vinyl finish.

The raised stripey ceiling finish is very much "in vogue" atm, and done well it does look good.
I used 6mm ply on my ceiling also. I have quite dark wall carpet and vinyl flooring though for practicality, so wanted my cupboards & ceilings to break it up a bit.
Cupboard doors are home-made (Routed 2x1 planed timber, with 6mm ply panels, sanded and coated in Danish Oil gives some contrast, but to lighten it up I used 5mm T&G Cladding (typically used for bathrooms etc - and I have used same for toilet wall and sink splashback). It's gloss white with a sort of silvery grey wood grain pattern.

Last one I did I used UPVC boards, cheap easy and lightweight

Might be cheaper from a local builders merchant.

I just used a half decent quality 6mm ply and used the originals as templates to be buttoned up with the original poppers. Sanding sealed and waxed. There was enough room above to fit lights in.

Every mm counted for us as it was a small van and that was economical, light, quick and thin. I liked the look too. We considered wrapping with stretch carpet but glad we didn't.

I have seen it in a campervan on a youtube channel and recently buuilders installed some as a fixed bed head in a house I was wiring

Selco is £7.44 for 6 x 44.

Find an arborist and ask for fresh conifer poles, mill them into boards and they will season well enough on your ceiling. Total cost just your time and petrol to mill them with a chainsaw then cut with circular saw.

The only problem with Wickes is the quality - never but a pack without checking it's not all bent as a corkscrew
