ok l know this has been asked before, even by me but back then l had no mains power and nothing happened, but things move on technologies get better systems get cheaper

l need to put something into my barn ( and around it ) l found this on amazon but there are so many at so many different prices, l dont really know whats the difference, do l take it it records on some form of hard drive ? can l send the recording of site somewhere some how ? if some one breaks in and steals the hard drive it was all a waste of money ?

can anyone recommend a mid range system that a ludite can install and set up, one that text me when it detects movement would be nice and then the ability to remove view over the phone would be good

Put the hard drive somewhere not easily accessible, up in the roofspace etc.

Unless you have a landline, you will need some form of mobile phone (GSM?) connection for remote viewing, don't suppose you can connect it to the mast next door?

My son in law has a system round the farm like you are describing. Remote access and images stored on a server somewhere off site, but I don't know any details.

For remote viewing you need to connect the DVR unit to a router, they use a fair bit of data too, mine is running through a 30 meg fibre broadband and runs really well, not sure how good they would be over 3G. one thing I do know is the setting up for remote viewing can cause premature hair loss!.

I purchased a similar setup a yr or so ago for around the home
Took me ages to workout how to view the thing on my mobile but worked in the end
Only problem I rem was something about my i.p address changing, so always had to faff about with it to be about to remote view the cameras. Sure someone here will know what I mean
Got me a diffo system now with a mofo ptz camera instead as the novelty soon wore off

We use quite a few Swann systems at work, some of them have been running 24/7 for years so reliability is good.

Good system but be careful. Many systems have a Motion detector, which once activated by intruder does not start to record for between 3 and 5 seconds in which time an intruders has already passed out of sight. My lads was garage was robbed using this method.

The better systems are always recording but the motion sensor being activated will "timestamp" the recording to stop the event being overwritten.

I have one indoors as well as the outside ones, a few weeks ago I was in Gran Canaria, very reassuring to be able to sit in the hotel bar and see into your living room, and look round the garden check the cars ok etc.

If you can find a security camera installer with a showroom it's worth looking at what sort of image you get from various cameras so you have realistic expectations. A cheap camera with a 6mm lens isn't going to let you read a car number plate at night.

And any cameras with built in illumination are going to attract spiderwebs so plan for that and don't put them anywhere you can reach to clean.

If you have a conduit out to your barn you can run really quite long cables to your cameras and have the recorder in the house. You can easily do runs of a couple of hundred metres using cat5 networking cable. If you want remote viewing you'll want that to be over network cable anyway. Some new recorders use iCloud for their Internet connectivity, a lot easier to set up than old dynamic dns based ones.

Ive got some of the cheap tenvis ip cameras. They have IR night vision, pan and tilt on two of them, and they have a inbuilt motion detector section in the firmware along with a scheduler so I can dicate which days/hours its on for and which uploads a sequence of frames if motion is detected, in fact they send me a email to special account on my phone. The need a router etc to send the mails offsite of course.
I've never used them wireless, but theyve been pretty ok so far. I've got a android app that can see all the cams too on my phone.
Video quality isnt bad, but took a bit of positioning before I was happy they covered the entrances and egress areas properly.

I do however get the odd midnight mail of a curious spider and moth next to the cam attracted by the IR leds, and I'm in process of disabling the IR emitter and adding seperate IR illuminators to make the moths and spiders not be the size of the screen so I can tune them out with motion detector sensitivity.

I have other more... manual protections in place also. No point seeing a pretty pic of someone in a hoody when you can terrify them with a few man traps too.
