Camera advice

Thanks Voipio & CJ, I've done the dirty deed now though.
Chunko that's a point, that the camera also has to survive motorsickle trips in a despatch bag, a nice DSLR might not like that. Praps I will carry on slapping the old Canon till it finally dies totally. Or praps it likes it.
The other half likes the look of it so all's good for now...

@ Woz. - That's a good price Norm & you pay for your cameras' batteries, where that has failed me in the past is; availability. One has way more chance of getting extra "prehistoric batteries" locally, than some fancy "Lions". Or worse; one is left waiting for special ones to arrive off the net...

So, what if your charger goes up the wall, while on hols? You gonna buy & carry a spare one of those too?

The transfer / data thing... What can I say... No-one is talking about on-board memory except you. You have that confused! ...just a little bit, but not too much to say; well done, I like your style!

For data storage; some compact cameras only use sony's proprietary memory sticks (expensive & exclusive). There are other examples of this vendor lock-in in the digital camera market - it's a mine field. I prefer the SD type memory cards, for storage, because they offer the most options; eg. cheap enough, have good capacity ranges, have open standards, good local availability and are established enough to be "forward compatible" with future tech.

For data transfer; I prefer using the cameras card reader option for transferring files too, but that shouldn't suggest that I would buy a camera without checking that it has both options, like Chippers' sx220

I prefer PROPER camera's that use film !! Love my old Nikon F2AS and not so old F5.
Also use a couple of Leica rangefinders and some really quite old rarer stuff.
The only digital thing I use is for ebay and quick reference pics.

Digital files? once deleted gone forever, when media change gone.

Ive had quite a few Fujis. Always been good and reliable. Currently got a HS10 which is the Idiots DSLR.......from Macro to massive zoom

Hang about a bit. Black and white was silver grains, once they are there they are more or less there. Colour film, increasingly popular from the 60s in slides and prints is about complex dyes which can and do break down and fade.

Anyway, if you burn your photo files into a DVD or CD are they any less permanent than a black and white photo on an acetate negative, or a paper print? OK some photos were on glass plates, which also had problems with being scratched and broken.

I went through the whole film thing with darkrooms and SLRs and hoards of slides and prints, but I must admit that I prefer digital cameras. I certainly make far more use of my digital camera than I did of the SLRs.

CD ROM, hard drive, flash drive, etc, will all degrade relatively rapidly, added to the fact that we will lose the ways to access them in the future. Compared to books that man created many hundreds of years ago which are still legible even now.

I wanted a dslr, but decided it would be wasted for what i use it for, but wanted something with a few extra features, i went for a bridge camera. Has a proper view finder, electronic fish eye lense.....fiddle with all the exposure times etc.
And didnt break the bank either.


I like the AA battery option, readily available. And lets face it, A few AA batteries, isnt really heavy!

i agree most of the information on the internet now will be gone in years to come due to hardware failure at some point but as its a rolling medium nobody will ever notice or realise

We don't look at the digital pics so much as we did with the old printed ones. Spose we should see about getting some printed.
I have only one pic of my Grandad, photocopied off an old print - guess with digital at least pics won't be rare. There's something about an old photo though... like with LPs.
On the film front, I had a tiny darkroom once, still got my Dad's enlarger & gear from the 50s/60s. Maybe the boy will dabble with it one day.

Video next Got a big old hi-8 digital/tape one, small dogs circulate round it's gravitational pull. When I've digested the acronyms from the new camera (around early 2015) i'll be asking you all about video cams

Information etc - I wonder what will happen, with new storage formats all the time. CD/DVD will be dropped, we'll need to move pics off that to something else. Computer drives are as reliable as Greek prime ministers, software changes etc etc. How much will get lost as time goes on.

i have a canon eos 550 with a few different lenses, they take brilliant shots and its easy to use and you can see what you have taken straight away, you can buy an add on to the lense to take wide angle at a very reasonable price (for what they are). this cost me just for the body £600 and quiet a bit for the lenses and other equipment i have, my advise is to buy the best you can afford but dont rule out the DSLRs because they are easy to use even for a begginer. hope that my opinion helps a little
