If any of the above aren't suitable I know Hamlins in Bridgwater, Somerset have a very good reputation at reasonable prices.

Correct, you have to weight both ends of the conrod, piston, rings, gudgeon pin, everything, then a weight that is a percentage of the rod end and piston is hung from the gudgeon pin hole, when the crank will sit on the knife edges without rotating, its balanced. I believe the balance factor is something like 55%, it splits the vibration between the horizontal and vertical planes.
http://www.newman-cams.com/ do top work better that the variable ****e we get from Kent
Thanks Sean. I sent them to David Neman Cams. Nice bloke to deal with.
Total cost to reprofile cam and 12 followers, inc return postage £305. Sorted![]()
Cam kit from USA about £150 complete !!!
I'd never deal with Newmans, but, hey ho.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, so's been told afterwards
I looked and looked, cheapest I could find was 200usd for the cam and 125usd for recon followers.
Where did you get that price from?
From my supplier of Chevy 6 stuff
I'm lost for words Steve. Why on earth tell me this afterwards.
Could you have not said this in your first post, nearly 3 weeks before I sent them out![]()
Well you know what I do for a living mate, don't blame me
I'm not blaming you.
I'm questioning why you would bother to rub my nose in it, after that fact.
Clearly you knew what it was for, otherwise you wouldnt of suggested the States.
So we both lost out. Cheers
Post 17 maybe you missed it ?
Not worth doing in my opinion, new cams and lifters are very cheap
They're not, but someone could read it and ask "Langy, I didn't know they were cheap, where would you get them from?"How is anyone supposed to deduct from that statement; you supply cams.![]()
Tom, how would you go about balancing a single cylinder motorcycle crank and rod statically (on knife edges) ? If i know the balance factor, how would i work out the weight to hang in the conrod in place of the piston
as i remember when my pal did my racing norton weigh the conrod at the little end with the rod lying horizontal weigh the piston, rings, gudgeon pin with circlips and add up this is now the reciprocating weight ,choose your balance factor eg 63 percent and calculate 63 percent of the previous weight ,now make a weight ,lead fishing weights ideal and tie through small end bush set the crank up on knife edges and let the conrod hang downward ,rotate crank and note where it stops this is the heavy bit , tape lead or old nuts opposite till crank stops in any position and dosent, move back or forth ,now you know roughly where to start drilling the heavy side remove the temp weights and carefully drill and keep trying till it rotates and stops in any position without moving
on a single you wont get rid of the vibes but you can dial it in for a particular rpm band , ihad a racing inter with removable plugs on the crankcases to access the crank to screw in lead weights to alter the balance factor
if you read PHIL IRVINGS book TUNING FOR SPEED all will be revealed
sitting on a knife edge is not as good as what I can balance stuff to, on a regular basis, as part of our calibration procedure i balance a rotor to half a micron of displacement.
pure unbalance will be the same in the vertical and horizontal plane, but with an engine and taking into consideration of the mounts and various rotating speeds then it is very difficult to be as clean cut as 55%.
I sent a couple of cam followers for refacing. They persuaded me that they could make a new set for a tenner more than refacing them.I'd never deal with Newmans, but, hey ho.
How is anyone supposed to deduct from that statement; you supply cams.
Steve if you want to give me price for Cam and followers to fit a 1950 GMC 228 Feel free.
