Calling the vice squad!

I have followed other threads on vices but thought I'd start a new one.
Does anyone know if this vice is really this old?
It has 1917 on it! and Record no2.
It's a friends that I'm looking after (for the last 15 years!) a very nice vice.

Personally I think it is only good enough to hold a body in a sack on the bottom of lake.

If you send it my way, I'll save you the embarrassment of having to endure it fixed to the end of your bench.

That could possibly be the date it was made. It's unusual for manufacture dates to be added though, so I'm assuming that was some significant date but possibly not related directly to the year of manufacture. From what I've heard though, they stopped using Hampton on the vices and just used Record quite early on, (probably somewhere between that date and the end of WWII), so it's definitely got a good few years on it. That's only the second one I can personally recall seeing with the Hampton name on it, so they're not overly common. That one is definitely worth looking after. The numbering system for that style changed later on too. That's what would be the 2* series in the Record range.

CW will probably be able to add more. I must admit that I've never paid too much attention to Record history personally.

Thanks for the replies, I never noticed it had Hampton on it until recently when I gave it a bit of TLC, I thought it was unusual. It's a great old vice that I'm quite attached to now but like I said it actually belongs to a mate that left it hear a long time ago but hasn't forgiven about.....
I wonder if he'll take this in exchange?

I doubt he'd even realise it wasn't the same one. Sounds like you've given his vice far more care & attention than he ever has anyhow, so if he does ever ask for it back, just ask him if he wants that newer one instead, save you having to unbolt the other and possibly redrilling your bench for bolts. They're pretty much the same vice, bar a good few years difference in manufacture dates.

I wonder if the 1917 related to the date company was founded rather than date vice made ?
After all I doubt many such were made for the domestic market during WWI with bulk of manufacturing being military items.

As far as I recall, they started earlier than that. Just after the turn of the century, or thereabouts. Only found out the other month that it was one of the same family who started the Woden company too.

The 1935 Record catalogue shows all the vices having the Record name on them, the 1923 B&H catalogue only has one Record vice in it, that also has the Record name on it.
