Calling Clark’s CL500M owners

Hi guys, I have recently picked up a CL500M, second hand and needs a bit of work. I don’t know the back story to it but some parts seem brand new, I don’t think the compound slide has ever moved. However all of the wiring had perished. I received a box of bits with some duplicate items in, I almost think it was damaged in original transport, damaged parts provided but never set up.

Anyhow.. I am looking for some help with the auto feed, I have a bag of cogs, (may be missing a few 15 in total+small one on the main drive) my main issue is I believe I am missing a mounting plate for them? Could anyone help with some accurate dimensions if it’s just a plate I am missing?

This is more like it, can anyone help with accurate dims of number 10 ‘plate’ on page 18/19

The photo of your machine, the photo Fig 14 and the GEAR TRAIN diagram are each showing a different version of reality.

The gear train diagram shows parts 1-7 bolting into the curved slot. There is nothing in that diagram to stop part number 10 rotating on part 31.

In Fig. 14, the gear is in the straight slot. The curved slot has an Allen bolt in it stopping the whole thing rotating. You can see the same in Fig. 21 later in the manual - the Allen bolt is labelled 6.

On the photo of your machine, the part the Allen bolt screws into is not there at all.

I suspect that if you were able to contact either of the two people above, they could give you the info. you need.

If not, the part the Allen bolt screws into is more important just now than the banjo (the common name for part number 10). Once you have that, you know the centre distance from the leadscrew to the clamping screw, which gives you the radius of the curved slot. Guess the angle of the slot from the photo - more than 30 degrees and less than 45 degrees. The straight slot should be horizontal when the curved slot is in the middle of its travel. You can work out the length of the straight slot by looking at the thread cutting gear combinations in the manual and seeing the biggest and smallest that it needs to accommodate.

Make one out of cardboard and make some gear blanks also out of cardboard sized to the pitch circle diameter of your gears and refine it until it fits.

I've got a CL500 (the lathe side is identical the CL430 to broaden your search), but I won't have anytime to measure it until next week.

Thanks both, agree I could probably just knock up a template for the banjo. Studying the vid/photos closer I have a better understanding of how it works.

I am still a little baffled of how the ‘locking’ mechanism works, I have nothing for the lower Allen key bolt to screw into, I am wondering if the part on the back of the banjo simply buts up agains the upper section to lock into place?

I also guess I am missing the ‘idler’ bearing, or just the post to mount the last cog onto.

m_c if you could help with just a few photos of the parts I am missing it would be helpful. Any roughy dims could also be helpful.
