By sheer coincidence during this current "draws" pandemic, I happen to be making a cabinet drawer conversion to a jerry built shelving thing for a neighbour. It's pretty solid but ropey as anything.
Nothing vertical nothing square in any dimension, bit of a nightmare but I need the work so...
Yeah, sure, I can make you something like this:
Which ended up more like this:
Once I had sorted out some recycled DRAWER runners (local skip find, they're actually top notch components). Then figure out how to decide which Blum soft close hinge would be suitable. For anyone who hasn't had to build a bespoke cabinet unit, the combinations and permutations for a simple hinge are virtually astronomical. Is it insert, flush, inside an aperture, on the side of a support, what's the opening angle etc. There are a zillion options all requiring millimetre precision to fit.
Anyhow, I made up the DRAWER units from MDF and found materials, mostly decent looking plywood scraps.
Then glue up nice and square.
Then work out how to make them fit square into an unsquare chassis. The answer was to build an internal chassis to line everything up and develop sufficient strgth for the DRAWERS, some shelving and the door mountings. I also needed to box it in, leave access for a hidden wall socket and not touch the walls or floor.
One on the left which you can see is a mile out of square with the original, just to make sure the DRAWERS can come out at 90 degrees to the front.
One on the right was a good inch and a half out of plumb. That large brown support which sticks out at the top it dead flush at the bottom of the existing leg which is already tapered!
The DRAWER units just rest on the runners and I need to come up with a sort of clip to keep them in place. They will get an MDF fascia on the front which I promised the client I would build with a 2mm shut line all the way around.
What a palaver! getting those shut lines was a NIGHTMARE! But the hinge installation went well.
And they have a brilliant adjusting mechanism so long as you're within a few mm. So I finally managed to achieve an acceptable fit.
I am literally waiting for some paint to dry so that I can get this overlong project finished. Hopefully tonight...
