Do you mean a maximum of 3mm thick?? If so then yes, I have welded 3 and 4mm mild steel successfully with my Mig welder using CO2.

You can do either with CO2. The shielding gas used will no change what gauge steel you can weld. That is down to skill level and machine setting. I have successfully welded from 0.8mm steel up to 4mm with my Clarke 150 turbo using CO2 gas.
