Hi folks,
I've just enrolled at college starting next year for tig welding C&G level 2. I've been welding like mad to try and be of a good standard so I can improve even better when I'm on the course.
I originally thought that the fillet weld would be the most difficult but I seem to be wrong. I can fillet weld 3mm steel with I nice neat weld. I moved onto the vertical butt weld which is also on 3 mm mild steel and its proving to be a pain
I can control the weld pool no problem, its trying to get full penetration of the weld that's the problem. I've tried all sorts leaving a 1.6 mm gap, filling with 2.4 mm rod , filling with 1.6 mm rod, 100 amps, 90 amps, 120 amps all controlled with the foot pedal. I can get a nice neat vertical weld but don't get penetration on the other side . When I do get penetration it doesn't look too good on the inside face and it even looks under cut. So I'm at a loss as to what to try, my torch angle is good . So can anyone shed some light onto the secret of doing it. I've tried searching for info but found nothing. Firs of all I am correct in thinking that you have to have full penetration of the butt weld and secondly can you taper the edges as this seems to me the only logical way of getting full depth and a neat weld. Even Jody at weldingtipsandtricks says it very difficult to get full depth on a 3 mm butt weld
So can someone Please Please enlighten me as I'm going nuts
Cheers
