Buying/Taking over old company name.

I want to make sheet metal machinery, not for ducting lock roll thing but for the double curve coachbuilder.
Im sick of rebranded junk as mentioned in another current thread and no fan of china poop.

Being a nostalgic fool Id like to resurrect a old favourite fj Edwards though Edwards pearson is being stamped on china junk so I don't know about fj Edwards being different enough or the besco known the world over logo. Or perhaps ranahla who made the harp shaped wheels(English wheel to discovery channel viewers)

As long as I brake even that's all that matters as its a vanity nostalgia project.

my question is how do I even find out how to buy license take over if forgotten not wanted or whatever.

Imagine being able to buy machines that last several lifetimes again

to buy a name to go on companies house and see if the name has been taken, there is another site that will check to see if the name is free, i set up a company online cost me under £100

companies House would be your first stop if you're going to go ltd company.
I believe that if you resurrect a dead company, you also resurrect any debts it had.

as a sole trader then you can call yourself what you like, unless it's done to deceive.

unfortunately, if you decided to call yourself the same name as an old company, trading in the same industry, that could be seen as "done to deceive".

if you use the name of a company which is still active/trading of even "owned", you are liable to a tort of "passing off" - and that means £££££££ and a lot of aggro.

I know something about this because I had to research it when a new trader set up on the same market as me, selling the same product, with almost the same name ("the book men" Vs, me, "the book man"

What about something like "Modern Edwards" as a name. Along the lines of, The Edwards quality you know in a re-engineered product.
Should get around any naming issues.

Its not easy, last I knew 600 group owned it, but now with the made in china lot using Edwards pearson Im wondering whats been sold off.

An application for a company name can be rejected by Companies House if it could be confused with another company.

Check with the Intellectual Properties database, a company name be a brand, in which case it will be owned by someone. If it's owned by a holding company you may be able to purchase it. A good example is "Wolf", the famous brand of power tools.

You could end up with a large legal bill if you're not careful, there was a hairdressers in Sheffield called "British Hairways" and they painted their sign in blue & red. British Airways got their lawyers on to them. Similarly there was a beauty salon whose address was 9, xxx street, so they called themselves "No9" and got a snotty letter from Chanel.

I think not...

Owning a patent or a trademark means one thing in China - you will sell one full priced article - they will buy it - copy it - then produce it by the container full...

Changing world... Copyright or any intellectual ownership has only a value in the past. You need money and warships to protect your sales now.

Going off topic, I know you said vanity project, but surely a potential purchaser is going to see a machine that only lasted one lifetime, and it's known for previous reputation that it's still got a few to go, up for sale for a few hundred quid, or a new machine with no proven reputation costing several thousand quid . . . ?

The only time I ever had issues with Company house is when there was an issue with the company I was researching had 4 different trading names.

I know people who when dealing with company house who had not done any research or expected Company house to do the work for them.

Quality will be to original. Pro metal workers are sick of junk.
You correct when you compare to used,thing is stuff is getting harder to find. Also im not going to attempt to have a new folder cast in England and expect to sell them. High quality wheeling machines maybe.

They tried, but have been knocked back. They were successful when some small company used Easzi jet".
