All the yards around me flog metal, they make more money out of you than they get flogging it on to the next yard up the chain.
I use a stockholder that is quite happy to chop short bits of metal off, so they do exist.

Cool - appreciate the responses. Think I'll try wandering into local recyclers and see which ones I get a positive vibe from.

Never usually a problem for me getting steel as i have several sources including cds and chromemoly but small amounts of ali especially for use on the lathe is difficult to come by but had a result yesterday and got a contact in my local non-ferous stockholders that'll let me have a rummage though their offcuts bin of ali offcuts as they a lot of multiple cutting for engineering companies,

he charges a flat rate of £3 per kilo so got myself a 9 kilo/£27 bag of various sized bars for starters

The chromemoly and cds can be bought in small amounts, usually by the foot from some of the race car shops i use for drag race type stuff, Robinson race cars and Hauser race cars are a couple,

General purpose steel in small amounts i can often get from some of the metal fab shops we use in my day job,

small amounts of sheet in ali, steel and s/steel including folding etc i get done from Hussey's in Bounds green/north london.
