Hey guys,
I am considering purchasing a TIG welder, or potentially a more expensive MIG than my current machine and would really appreicate a little advice on the topic.
I have so far taught myself to MIG weld, but have had some minimal instruction on both ARC and TIG (aluminium). MY recent experiences at trying TIG welding on aluminium have led me to wanting to try a bit more at home but I have limited knowledge of the equipment needed.
I currently own a Gasless MIG welder but it really is only good for smaller low power jobs and really is just a cheap machine i purchased at uni (although it as done me fantastic service with lots of great projects underneath its belt). For bigger jobs I have been using a higher power gas mig that I have been able to borrow from a neighbour. Even using 'pub' gas I have had great results with this and acheived some great quality welds.
A house move (have a garage now!) and a few project ideas have led me to wanting a better quality welder for myself now, although I have a limited idea on what to buy. In terms of the MIG vs TIG debate i would really like the ability to work with aluminium and improve my skills there. The ability to weld around 5-6mm steel is important as I have done this sort of welding before for subframe building and found my MIG welding results to be good for this as well as enjoyable.
I don't have a 3 phase circuit at the house so single phase is a must. Second hand is fine. Any advice would be fantastic, I will try and post my findings here as I learn more about the subject (as mentioned earlier I enjoy welding as a hobby and am by no means an expert at the background theory).
