buying a tig could someone please explain

That also does stick what are these machines like and I would be useing the tig part of the machine with a very occasional use

That's an MMA inverter (stick welder) that offers 'lift TIG'. Pretty much any DC stick welder can be used for TIG but they are MUCH more basic than a 'real' TIG i.e. missing most of the features like for example... no gas solenoid/controls (you use a torch with a manual valve on the handle), no slope controls/foot remote for tapering off/varying the welding current and no HF start

That looks expensive for a DC TIG and doesnt include a TIG torch.

Weldequip has several DC TIGs: http://www.weldequip.com/tig-welders.htm

For the same price, you could get the TEC-Arc 206i and have an AC/DC TIG. The Tec-Arc 186i DC TIG is about half the price. The Inverter Fusion is a bit more and is a nice set by all accounts here.

There are good reasons why an EWM welding set costs more than something made in China!

Was going to say but Engineer beat me too it, there is a reason why the EWM is more expensive. The stuff previously mentioned, is not in the same league as EWM.
