buying a new mig

Hi all

I'm looking for a new mig. I am a novice with little welding experience so, part of it is a learning tool but in the bigger picture I'd like to do motorcycle fabrication maybe only body work to begin with but moving onto frame fabrication when I have more experience.I have found on eBay a mightymig 140 and thought this might be a good starting point which won't break the bank.

So opinions thoughts am I on the right track?

I imagine it all boils down to the budget you have, money is often wasted by purchasing something that will just do what you want at the moment.

If your welding develops into other areas and projects you may find the 140 a bit limiting and have to start looking again.

My advice for what it's worth is always buy the best mig you can afford, even if it means another few months saving up the cash.

A really good machine for the work you suggest and with a capability to do more would be the Portamig 185, a fair bit more money but a lot more machine.

Backing the budget down a bit, the Clarke 160 is a nice machine for the money.

as ive learnt from here it all depends on what you buy and your budget that you can afford

however i wanted to buy something a bit more of an expensive machine but for just tinkering and not using it full time choose a cheaper model to learn upon thoe it all depends on what you machine you have learnt on before

I do have a maypole 520 which was given to me its on a bit of a sorry state and could probably use a new torch but as I'm starting is it worth chucking a few quid at it or is it easier to buy new?
