Butters 271 replacement??

Hi there

I am new to the forum but i used to own a butters single phase 271 welder before it was stolen!!Would i be wise to go for the same one again or is there a competitor that would be better to go for? Used to be a cracking set!!

Can anyone help with this?

The 271 is still available, but not under the Butters name. SWP MIG 171 should be much the same. It's on offer right here: http://www.weldequip.com/swp-mig271.htm

What do you use it for? It's a fabrication set for thick metal, and if you are doing cars as well there would be much more appropriate welders available. Or if you never used the high amps and wanted some other features there might be other directions you could go in.

hi there thanks for the reply. My hobby is the cars and before it was stolen it was a good set for the thin metal work found in car body shells.

However the family business is a plant hire company and we often used the set for the likes of everything and anything. It used to get used for welding about of 5mm box and 10mm plate type stuff.

We were wanting to spend about £1000. I though it was difficult to try and find the welder. Have butters reduced the amount of products now?

What recommendations can you make? only problems is that we are on single phase.

Butters went bust a year or two ago, and the European sourced welders they used to sell are now being sold as Parweld and SWP. (There is a new Butters that rose from the ashes and sells Chinese stuff but I haven't heard very much about them.)

My thought was just that the 40 amp minimum would be a bit restrictive for bodywork if you were doing cars. Get a welder with a 20 or 30 amp minimum that worked just as well in every other respect and it would allow much more adjustment for car stuff and allow continuous welds with less risk of hole blowing.

Not sure which welder to suggest. The Portamig range sold on here goes to 235 amps with good duty cycle and a 20 amp minimum which works well on the thinnest cars (there are some bigger ones available - you need to ask Weldequip about them and I don't know the minimum amps). Well under budget but they are made to order for reasons I can't understand so you wouldn't get one until July.

Anyone else have suggestions for other manufacturers or welders? I can only think to suggest the Lorch which is lovely but über budget for 270 amps.

Hi Phily C, a replacement for your old Butters & your needs, would be either a single phase Butters 180 or the 200. They are either sold as the Topweld (Orange) or the slightly cheaper Weldwizard (Red) range, they are designed & made in the U.K, with the parts sourced from the U.K or Europe, not China.
