Buttering on nickle rod pad

I have to going a mild steel eye to a cast iron ram end. Can I use Nicole rods as root and lay a pad on the iron face then use mig to preform the rest of the weld .will the mild steel wire hold to a ferro nickle base
Has anyone tried this?

Rod end likely to be cast steel than cast iron - have you tested to see what it is?

If cast steel, preheat and weld as normal with slow cooling.

If nodular/grey cast iron then nickel all the way out

@bR39Da - Lincoln RepTecCast - I have had super success with these.

But they expensive - spendy for box is not the word.

4.2kg box of 2.5mm's was nearly £500 quid (ouch)
