Butcher using diesel generator saves 1/3 of leccy cost

Interesting one here , Butcher switched over to running his emergency generator full time to save money, Would be interested to see the calculations on this if there's maintenance wear and tear included.

It would be even more efficient if you can use the heat from its cooling system.

Saw a similar thing on countryfile a few weeks back, think a pig farm was using a big diesel generator and saving over grid electric.

i dont think the cost of repairs or replacment has been factored into the costings

what they will find out what you save has got to be spent on new equipment again as it fails

Also will depend if your paying for maintenace or-doing it diy. Though keasing the genny might work, nitsure

Otherwise one power outage and their business could be ruined.

Many businesses would be the same, all they are doing is switching them over from standby to primary supply.
I doubt maintenance costs would change much as they would have them services either way.

The wise are already doing it and saying nowt for that exact reason.

All you got to do is look at the new car tax rules for electric cars and it’s apparent once the government* lose too much revenue in one direction, they’ll regain it in another.

I mean any, of any colour, not THE government.

Is there a reduced rate on white in a generator? Just wondering? I know if you use white diesel as fuel you could fill out a form to get a 15% VAT rebate.

No one does, they either just use it or buy Kero but the mechanism is there so that’s why I wondered about power generation as opposed to plant.

Yes you can get the duty and VAT back if you are a farmer or a fisherman. The fishermen that have outboards are actually paying less per litre for petrol than the ones that are using red.

My mates who run a sawmill over here in France last month there two yearly negotiated contract for electricity has gone up five fold, yes, five times !

A standby genny when started a couple of times a year would last a lifetime on minimal maintenance though - running one 24-7 I imagine would soon wear things out and require replacement or at least a decent overhaul after maybe a few years or sooner? I don’t really know much about such things but I wouldn’t imagine anything with “standby” in the name is meant for prolonged running over weeks/months/years.

I doubt this is true. More likely the title should be
Butcher cant do maths on actual costs.

He should be using white diesel but I bet he is using red.
Even red is over £1 per L

Each kWh will use 300g of fuel if its a really efficient genny.
Smaller ones more like 5-600g

So on red its about 30p per kWh & on white nearer 55p

I have no idea what the current cost is per kWh on the grid as we are off grid.

Got an electric van on order.... That i'll be charging up from a diesel generator...

that's the thing with these electric cars... they never show footage of one being charged up outside a power plant

out of sight out of mind. it's a big con really..

He said his elec bill was £350k
Then said he used 2500L per week in the genny.

That amount of white would cost currently on trade card £209300 hardly a 1/3rd of his is elec bill.

BUT

The amount for elec that 2500l per week can make is just 7500kWh

That is 390k kWh. So his normal elec rate is nearly 90p per kWh.

To reduce his cost to 1/3rd he must be running on red which is ilegal.

We've seen in work quite a few Farmers buying diesel sets for daily use.
I doubt they'll be 24/7 - they'll Milk ad run all their heavy peak demand off the genset and switch to mains for low-level basics.
Best of both.
An industrial diesel genset can do very impressive run hours if you do the basic mtce/servicing too.
In fact, our lot recently moved to a new yard, and is waiting on a new utility supply...... but running the yard & workshops off a 40kva genset every working day is working out to be way cheaper than the tariff WPD or whoever want - so chances are it'll stay as-is for the foreseeable.
