Butane Reg

Hi,

Does anyone have a butane reg knocking around that they would let go, I need one to help me empty off the gas bottles ive got, and I dont really want to buy new as its a waste seeing as I dont use butane for anything!

Assuming you mean the clip-on type, there are two different sizes, they look the same but they're not interchangeable.

It would help if we knew the make & size of bottle and where you were.

Venting a cylinder through a reg will not empty it, there will still be some pressure because the reg resists the gas flow as you probably know. I strongly recommend reading the next thread down when working with gas cylinders as we can never be too safe.

Safety

I am keen to make it as safe as possible, hence why i thought using a reg to bleed last bit out was safer than bodging something up...

Anyone got a good, safe way of letting any residula gas out before i have a go at undoing the valve?

some bottles have a small slot milled in the threads part way up so when its unscrewed it vents before the threads finaly come out a safety mechanism .provided u have emptied it with a regulator on just unscrew slowly pereferably outside and it will lose any residual pressure left in before threads end

i lost the gas a full 10lb bottle of propane last month it was leaking .couldnt smell it because i wasnt in garage for a few weeks. went to use my pit. big shock i got. it had drifted into the pit and was stiill there so beware gas is heavier than air

heavier than air gas can be 'bucketed' out of an underground chamber or pit. Bucket on a rope, lower the bucket in and it fills with the gas, lift it up and tip it away down-hill - away from the chamber/pit.

Doing it in a BT manhole on the High Street gets a few funny comments as people can't see the gas, they think the bucket's empty. Apprentices always thought it was a wind-up!

Once you dilute the marsh gas etc. that's sometimes found in manholes it can with your bucketing actions .

I was taught to use a canvas wind diverting /channeling screen and do my gas tests.
