Burr or Stone

I have a small bit of rust to cut out on a project car and it's in an awkward place under the rear wheel arch near the fuel filler cap. I was planning to drill around the rust then join the holes up and tidy with some kind of grinding attachment on a flexi shaft. Then patch with glassfibre laminated with epoxy resin.

I think a straight sided cylindrical cutter of maybe 6mm would be good? Would I be best getting a carbide burr, or a stone?

Look out for the safety aspects of working near fuel or fumes of the same whatever you use

Grinding = sparks, + petrol fumes = catastrophic [unless it's a diesel, in which case ignore the foregoing.

I take the point, but the petrol hoses have been blocked and bagged for some time and tucked under the car. I'll run a fan in the area before any work takes place.

Will a burr produce less/no sparks compared to a stone? I actually have one of these burrs already.

A burr should not produce sparks.

I'd go with a burr, stones in my opinion are generally rubbish and wear out faster than they remove material

Thanks for the replies. Do you think the burr in my ebay link is OK? Or do I need one with a continuous cutting edge kind of like a spiral?

The one you have will be fine and should not wander - as might be the case with a spiral fluted cutter. Beware of splinters though. Make sure you wear good safety specs. and gloves.

As Bladevane suggested, if using a burr wear decent eye protection. Whilst using the standard safety specs, I still got a splinter in my eye and had to go to the hospital to have it taken out. I now use a face shield for everything, rarely using specs for anything.
A burr will create tiny splinters rather than dust. Having said that, I still prefer to use a burr over a stone for most cases.

I would use a tungsten burr and make sure the particles go away from you, are you aware grp doesn't adhere that well to steel ?

If you would like to try a mounted stone I have a biscuit tin full of them, you're welcome to them I have never found any situation where they are the go to tool.

I think my burr is tungsten? Is carbide not tungsten carbide?

I don't use normal safety glasses as stuff just goes round the edges. Got some goggles.

Wasn't aware GRP didn't bond well to steel, would have thought a good key up and it should be fine? I'll be using epoxy resin anyway which I believe has much better adhesion anyway.
