Your lights too? How about the TV? It gets turned on before 8AM and goes off after midnight, whether she is at home or in the garden or even out shopping etc. When pulled up I get "Well I wasn't going to be long" or "The dog needs it for company".

Nearly all of the lights here are under Alexa control so that helps a bit.

Average output of seasoned hardwood logs is about 1750 kwh per ton, modern stoves run at around 75% efficiency so you should get about 250/260 hours out of a ton of wood on a 5kw stove, a ton of wood is not to be confused with what the log boys deliver which is normally a cubic meter.

Probably only about 200kg of wood.
If you have to buy wood then gas or oil will be cheaper. It costs around £60 for that much heat from oil or gas. Buying 1 ton bags at £60 a pop will set you back £250 to £300.
It is cheaper than using electric heating though - then again so is burning £5 notes

Out of interest, and apologies to venture slightly OT, what are people’s thoughts regarding the future of wood burners? Personally I think some kind of legislation will be introduced limiting or even prohibiting their use on environmental grounds. Alternatively they may be required to be fitted with some kind of device to reduce emissions (I presume such technology exists?).

Sorry to sound like a killjoy that’s not my intention, I do actually like wood burners and I have a professional interest in their future.

Bearing in mind the U.K. imports over 6 million tons of wood a year to burn in power stations, I don’t see any legislation coming into effect any time soon.

You should be grateful. My 'indoors believes that 24 is tolerable, 26 comfortable. I had to tell her to put a sweatshirt on earlier, she was walking about in a tee shirt complaining of being cold. Her winter heating regime, left to her own devices is to whack the thermostat up to 26, set all TRVs to max and then when it is too hot, open the doors and windows.

I jest not.

My house is 15c today, back door is open, but it doesn’t feel cold in the slightest.

New temp gauge fitted as the ‘stat figures are invisible sometimes, there’s only 0.2° difference though.

A tad more than 200kgs but not much more, out of curiosity we weighed some a few years ago, This is a ton of logs.

They are already on it, the new wood burners are efficient and produce less in the way of pollution. Of everything burnt for heat/power wood is if properly managed the only sustainable heat source.

Got to agree with you fizzy,we have a rayburn 355sfw & 2 front room stoves, one with a back boiler coupled via a neutraliser to the rayburn to heat rads /domestic & cooking & as you say they gobble the wood,I've just ordered 2 ton of blueflame, we're not in a smokeles zone 1 ton for us & 1 ton for the son, 1 ton will last a year but only if we can get wood,we've cooked on wood for 50 yrs, trouble is now every one & their dog are fitting "wood burners" it's the latest craze hence the price of logs plus coal products have shot up in price it's now £360 a ton, I wouldn't have a log burner , mine are multifuel stoves, nice & cosy but dirty dusty & you need plenty of space to store fuel.

That explains why I feel the cold - friends have said "there's more meat on a Butcher's pencil"

Our main central heating is oil but we use the wood burner to supplement it which means we dont have to have the heating on as much or as high, the 1st year of having the wood burner saved us about 750ltrs of oil or about £300.00 so in 4 years its paid for itself, we use about 6-8 dumpy bags and all the wood we burn is either off our own land or from local tree surgeons, regardless of what happens with gas/oil/electricity suppliers we will never be cold so as far as im concerned thats a win win situation

When I lived in the Brecon Beacons we had a Rayburn one end of the house feeding 7 rads and a huge woodburner.
We would go through 3 or 4 dumpy bags per week. Considering people charge £50 or £60 a bag it would have cost us a fortune.
I bought 44 tons of wood from the forestry people - half hardwood and half soft.
I burnt the lot in 1 winter

Grandparents had a Rayburn in the kitchen on a 1930's semi, on the part wall - used to run on anthracite, but due to copious free supplys of wood from my Uncles gate making business, it ran on wood.
When they died, the neighbours said they discovered their kitchen was actually cold in winter . . . the heat soaking through the wall had kept them nicely toasty in winter.

I actually turned on the heating tonight, but then I had a haircut and a shave earlier, so that must have made a difference. 17°c and it felt warm, had to take my socks and sweater off.
