Does that mean I could get away with oxy / prop?
That would be superb and sensible as I have two prop cylinders in the caravan on the drive anyway(please don't take the pi$$ about the 'van)

I use oxy propane all the time.....Its actually better for heating (especialy with a prop pepper pot), for cutting its slightly slower, but I regualy pug cut and profile cut 1"> plate with it (in my album theres some 1" being cut with the pug on propane)....TBH it makes little odds......your need PME nozzles for you mixer and a prop reg.....

Most fab shops run propane on profilers and track cutters, as snowcat says make sure you have the correct cutting nozzles, they are a two part nozzle as opposed to the one piece Acetylene, should be marked PNM for propane or ANM for Acet, An acetylene reg will fit a propane cylinder

Its not less dangerous as such, but it does require the presence of oxygen to ignite, so therefore can not burn in a sealed cylinder...acytelene can become unstable if knocked, or handled badly It will burn in its own cylinder if it becomes undesolved.......

Mick, you were talking about keeping the cylinders in the garage, right? What would your insurance co say if you stored them somewhere else, like in a separate shed? You could feed the hose in easy enough maybe, or the tanks could wander into the garage from time to time....
Depends if you have the option/space for an outdoor store I s'pose.

I keep my O/A cylinders in a separate shed, not attached to the house, and tend to use them outside. It's a little portapak on a trolley so quite easy to move around as needed. These days I use it mostly for brazing and silver soldering, although I do have a small cutting torch but it rarely gets used.
I am hoping to build a new workshop later this year, which will be around 8 to 10m from the house. All my tooling, welding equipment etc will go in there and no doubt I will have some lengthy conversations with the insurance company
. If it all gets too involved I may revert to oxy/propane as I plan to build a propane fired forge so will have bottles around anyway.
I originally bought the O/A as a portable welder approx 20+ years ago when I was racing motocross. There is never anywhere to plug in a mig in a field
, and there was a very limited choice of portable machines back then. We once drove from Southampton up to Kendal for a championship meeting, and broke a footrest during practice. No-one had any welding equipment with them so we had to bodge it up with wire and a few small screws. Next day I ordered the bottles!

Will do Wyn. At the moment I'm thinking rectangular and brick lined. There are several examples of home-made burners around the net, but I may go for a purchased item depending on cost.

Is there still a exemption for cylinders under a certain size? iirc there was a blanket exemption for gas cylinders to stop every camper van suddenly having to notify people about the propane etc. THe smallest portapak sizes boc sell are designed to be under this limit and thus dont require the legislatative bullcrap.
Its quite amusing to me, that here, you can buy a portapak with air liquide cylinders in the diy shop, and I can pop off to saga in town and get full size cylinders with no requirements about handling or storage.
I have a propane fired ceramic chip furnace too, but its a commercial one, a alcosa unit with a 3 phase blower on it. I paid around 80 for the whole thing as a complete unit. For that price its not worth messing round with fire cement or bricks.

Yes, the exemption still exists in Construction & Use for road vehicles. The Portapak has been very useful in the past, although these days it doesn't get used a lot - but when you need it, you need it so I keep paying the rental each year.
That was a good price for the forge MrF. As you say, never worth bothering making one if you can pick one up like that. I would need to change the blower to single phase but that's not too difficult.
