Burning back to the tip?

I finally got my wee mig working today, tis a Cebora PocketMig 110, I love freebees!

It did weld quite well, but seemed to be very keen to burn back to the tip. Any suggestions?

It did get better as the machine 'warmed up', is it likley to be just a dirty liner or something?

Am well impressed by how it welds though, what a difference compared to the buzz box my dad gave me a few years back.

Just gotta get some more tips now though...

Hi Boydy,

Sounds like the wire isn't feeding fast enough.

Obvious things first - guessing the wire feed is set sufficiently fast (and that you've tried various settings). Also, how much wire do you have protruding from the tip? You need the torch relatively close to the workpiece - the shroud should be almost touching.

You say that the welder was a freebie. When was the liner last changed? An old, smeggy liner won't help matters (cheap to replace too).

Also, it's worth checking that the wire feed mechanism / rollers are in good shape and working as required.

Good luck getting it sorted. Cebora is a pretty trusted brand so hopefully, it won't be too hard to remedy.

I tried several different speeds, and it still did it. It seemed to work best with the 'pipe' held as straight as possible, so i suspect the liner also.

The feed rollers have just been serviced, the pinch roller is a brand new ball race that I have just fitted, the old one shattered when I tried to free it off

I shall look into a new liner. When it did weld, it welded beautifully, nice quite hiss, really nice and tidy. It just stuck back to the tip a bit too often.

I had the same yesterday with my we;der and found that the top layer of wire had a couple of rust spots, just enough to make it bind in the tip and burn back.
Once i had fed all the rusty bits through it was fine.

It's better to actually strip the rusty layers off than to run them through the machine as the rust will quickly clog the liner.
Quite often a reel that looks fit for the bin can be saved by taking the time to strip one or two manky layers off.
A good tip is to remove the reel when not in use for any length of time, wrap it up and store it in the house or somewhere dry.

Thats what I always do - welding rods, filler rods, and mig wire always stored indoors. Another good thing about storing the mig wire elsewhere is that the hose/torch assembly can be whipped off and stashed safely away too. My mig takes up so much less space without the hose, and I dont have to worry about snapping the thing off when I bump into it with the trolley jack or whatever!
