Bungalow with steel frame construction

There’s a bungalow on the market which caught my attention in the estate agent’s window today
How ever when I looked through the sales brochure for the property I saw this….. the bungalow is of non standard steel frame construction-you should confirm with your mortgage provider that they would be happy to lend on a property of non standard construction….
What exactly does it mean?
Could there be problems with
corrosion

Light gage steel framing is pretty common over here for light commercial.
A few houses have tried it.
I have used it in my pole buildings as purlins.
Not the 26ga junk you find at Home Depot, rather ordered to size & length 18 ga.

In the UK I've always taken non standard construction to mean anything that isn't brick or block construction.

I'd suggest calling a few providers and just asking them.

The Riley house is a metal framed system of dwellings, first constructed in the mid-1940s by Riley Constructional Systems, a trading name of Cawood, Wharton and Co Ltd. The original ‘Cawood’ company was founded in 1919, and located in Harrogate, Yorkshire and later, also Gravesend, Kent. The company ceased trading in the 1990s.

Sounds like a salesman who doesn't want to make a sale, or one who is simply an idiot.

In this context, does non-standard mean:
1. unconventional or
2. not adhering to building standards

It appears that the bulk of new houses build here use steel frames. But they all comply with the relevant building standards.

If there is a question about lending or insurance, it might be a non compliant build. If that is the case, go elsewhere.

They are concerned with rust. A lot were built round here on small parcels of land for returning soldiers.

I owned a bungalow in S Manchester...On a small'ish lux estate...never any prob with damp or cold....
Only prob, tho small was when I added an extension....Plans were passed but nobody new it had a steel frame....inc the roof...
Until an inspector turned up from the council......Ended up no prob at all.....
PS some of those properties now sell for over a million £'s....

Prefabs. Any house or dwelling that has been prefabricated off site is a challenge to get a mortgage on. When stepson was looking for his first house we found a really decent semi at a ridiculously low price, not a chance getting a mortgage, the house was substantially built from precast concrete and as @Trevorleach has mentioned above, cold or extremely hard to keep warm, no insulation you see.

After the 2nd World war the influx of returning soldiers and the lack of houses, the need for quickly built dwellings was paramount, Asbestos Prefabs, Lightweight Steel Frames, Prefab concrete panels and cast on site, basically each level of the house is poured at once.

Some of the cast on site houses around here are as hard as steel to drill into the walls. SDS Drills have a hard time, hammer drills are a waste of time.

There’s a big workshop outside which has been used for car repair business there’s a 4 post lift inside Which caught my attention
I have always wanted a tidy size workshop for my old tractors but by the sound of things this may be better left alone

A lot of new builds now been thrown up with light gauge steel frames stuffed with insulation, then either rendered or a brick facing put on the outside.

I have heard (but can't find a source) that the current sustainability targets are that these new builds should have a life of at least 70 years to cover two mortgage cycles. I'll stick to traditional brick and block, thanks.

Quite simply they are trying to avoid saying that there have been problems with these dwellings therefore it can be difficult to get insurance and a mortgage on them.

The ones down Sandfields in Port Talbot were always called Pre Fabs, but that must have been in the 70s i'm sure there all gone

If they're on a nice plot/location and you have the dough to sort it all out then maybe....otherwise I'd stick to traditional brick/block personally.

I found out recently that a build date earlier than 1850 can also make things difficult too for insurance etc.

My mate has a steel frame bungalow, it now has a skin of concrete block with a 4" gap and insulation, the new roof with storage has made it a great property

Hmm idk...if the price is right it could be great opportunity - most buyers will be put off by the things said above so there won't be much competition (apart from developers who may want several houses on the plot?). But you need cash (or a loan) to get it in the first place.....and of course some flexibility in sorting out the niggles that will arise ....

A picture saves many words, and would let us give an opinion. I tried to buy a pre cast concrete bungalow, built in the 50s, theres a fair few of them round here. It was on 5 acres. It was bad, floors rotten from cats wee wee, obvious concrete if you knew what you were looking at, it had been really badly extended too. But it was a bungalow, in a national park with a fab outlook. My plan was to knock it down, crush the lot into a new base for a modern build, with a nod from the planning woman for the same foot print. I was outbid by 90k, cash buyers, the folk who bought it didn't even know it was a prefab. There are trying to do it up DIY with the odd builder, but most of the local lads wont touch it.
