What are the rules,we are moving forward to the 21st century so will need one,I’m siting it in the corner of my field,so only 30’ from the house,there’s loads for free now,these plastic ones with strengthening ribs,do they all comply with environmental regulations? Thanks.

as i happen to like this type of build you can make a monolithic concrete base including walls to a degree
there is also a cheating way as well using concrete fence boards and concrete long posts as well but the picture below is not sealed
first id fit your fence panel posts and use quick set concrete
now if you create a frame within the fence panels pref 3-4"or dont bother with the fence panels
you can create a floor and walls at the same time then the whole unit is sealed and if a large tank bursts in a large enough containment unit with a sump you can drain and collect the escaped fuel to be reused
and because youve built it out of long fence posts you can fit the sides and also a roof to them as well

All our tanks like that here in France must have a tray, in case they ever leak.
IIRC then if its oil then any storage of capacity 200L & above, must be in a 110% capacity bund (which for convenience tends to be a double-skinned tank). Overfill Protection valve & for commercial we installed a Hi/Lo/Bund Warning unit. The outlet connection to the fuel line & Return line was within the bund area.
Any fuel lines that go underground must be one-piece with no joints, & double-skinned with a leak detection system (for the Water Co they also demanded a shut-off solenoid on tank outlets [on tanks feeding gensets], so the fuel line was only opened just before engine cranking, & closed the moment the engine was shut-down).

Almost certainly the reasonThis is why garage 45gallon oil drums shrunk from 205 to 199 L
(I'm.sure you know & likely have those pallet truck moveable bund trays for oil drums - but if they are designed to have multiple drums on - they don't need to be 110% capacity, as the reasoning is that having more than one container fail at once is statistically unlikely).
On Fresh Water Works sites they are strict indeed about environmental stuff - it's a dismissal offence to take a leak anywhere on the site (except any loo of course). It's to protect the water & water table, reservoir whatever from pollution of course (but somewhat ironic when these places are invariably surrounded by land occupied by sheep & cattle venting themselves. Water Testing for Cryptosperidium bugs from sheep and other nasties is a big thing.

Some walkers see rivers and streams and assume that it's safe to drink - paying no attention to all the wildlife that chooses to ignore all the signs saying they're not allowed to pee in the streams and rivers with the inevitable results...

Yes, Ive had one, but been trying for a while to find another fairly local. Single skin tanks are easy had for pennies. But if-it were my field and I was accountable it would be a new bunded tank for oil.

Water from rivers with livestock grazing upstream is suspected in some cases, say NTS rangers.
(They aren't supposed to spread when it is or is going to rain - to enable the slurry to sink into the ground & be absorbed. However, if it gets rained on, the slurry gets washed away far quicker, enabling more slurry to be spread and got rid of - on the same land.........)

A bunch of us were way up a mountain in Andora with a guide, who was handing out glasses of Pernod diluted with sparkling fresh cold water out of a nearby mountain stream. All very idyllic until someone spotted a Frenchman from our party had wandered a little way upstream and was in typical French style happily p****ing in the stream!
