Think this is the way to go. Building it up with weld would be a last resort for me, though doable.Send it to me and I’ll sort it!
Weld is too soft
I’d shrink a 24t sleeve on it
Many years ago I was on a ship that the stern tube seals failed. So we diverted to Las Palmas for repairs. To get the stern tube out the water we had to ballast the front end deep. And black out as the water intakes were too shallow for the generators. Anyway after 3 days with the prop out the water, job was done. Now the only way to pump out the ballast up front was using the diesel emergency fire pump, that could take suction from the forepeak. Lasted 10 minutes, before the pump failed. As usual plenty spares, no have got.
So the pump was stripped and the damaged shaft where the bearing had siezed and rotated was build up with weld, then machined. The build up was done very slowly, rotating for each run. After a long night, many rods it was in the lathe. Wasnt too warped, but not brilliant. Machined it to the bearings we had and reassembled. It ran and pumped. Got even keel and sailed. At the next port, spares didn't arrive. The pump was run for a survey and failed. We were not allowed to sail till it was fixed. Built up again, tested, and sailed. Worse places to get stuck than Brazil, except when your working.
