What is the best or normal way to build a pillar for gates. Its being built with concrete blocks. Is a steel length of H iron best in the pillar to stop it falling. The gates aren't long, about 7ft each but if a youngster was climbing on it their could be plenty of pressure.
Does it make sense to cement the H iron into the ground and then cement a flat bit around it to build the pillar around it. I want it hinged at the corner so the gates go back past square, so is it best to keep the H iron at that corner in the pillar and weld brackets out from it to hold the gate. I've never actually seen a pillar being built before but I've seen plenty falling down after heavy wind and gates banging so I want to do it right.
