Building a hydraulic press

Fancy building something hefty. Around the 60 or 100 ton mark.
What length stroke do you need on the ram?
And can hydraulic spring return jacks be used upside down?

Providing the spring is in good condition, there shouldn't be a problem hanging it upside down, unless you decide to hang adaptors or tooling on the ram.

And some form of cage around the pressing area might be an idea, if you go high tonnage.

Go big Fizzy! I was going to buy a s/h 30 ton as I had to remove a collar and bearing from my Fordson major PTO shaft, but in the end took it to my local ag engineers, their 75 ton press wouldnt shift it, untill they heated the collar with O/A! Cost me £106 though but that included a new bearing for £12 and putting it all back together, I could have bought the press for three times that, but not one that would have got it off!!

I have a 30t ram and pump along with all the steel waiting on a roundtuit.

I looked at all these ideas before and bought this kit off the bay. It’s 30 Chinese tons but it lifts my truck when I tested it. I am building the frame to take twice that so when I find a better ram I can swap it out.

I think mines about 6-8”. You don’t need more than that to shift a bearing or bend some plate.

It weighs 90kg!
Same with winches.
I remember on a Landrover forum people were saying manual winches are nowhere near as powerful as electric.
Then I posted this.
Manual barge winches go up to 80 tons!

Just check the ram spec for threaded mounting holes in the base of the outer cylinder.

I know most Enerpac rams have threaded holes.

And maybe an air operated hydraulic pump foot controlled, trust me it can make a vast difference....

Gestamp in Cannock are in the process of scrapping the manual line, as in the presses are all going in the skip.

If i was starting from scratch then it would be a foot operated electric/hydraulic double acting Ram...ime thinking of changing my 10T Sealey into the same as having 2 hands while pressing stuff is so much easier.

Nope. some of the auto presses have been resold but all of the manual presses are being scrapped. Just easier for the office staff

You might be better buying one that size. A large single acting jack with an air powered pedal / reservoir will be £1500 new, then you’ll need to mount it somehow and steel will be £500 if not more. 50t presses are only £1500. You would likely get something bigger second hand for less. I made a bench top 25t press but I had everything kicking about, it would have been cheaper to buy one that make it if I had to buy the materials.

I have used a hydraulic powerpack/two way ram on a spoolvalve connected to a pedal plate. Release the footpedal and the ram retracts which leaves both hands free.
