building a gate

i'm looking for ideas of a garden gate at the side of a house.

i am wanting a good secure build, metal posts, metal hinges, wooden gates or sheets about 5'-6' high and 7' wide

I can dig down about 2' deep on one side but at the other the house foundations are about 1' under ground.

anybody got ideas?

also whats the best way to secure the gates shut?

the method for gate posts is that one third of the gates height should be equal to the underground part of the post, if you dont have enough depth at the other houses side could you not concrete it in then bolt it to the wall for some extra support? or pour lots of concrete, then once its set bolt the post down to it?
to set the gates shut theres loads of options, drop bolts, pad bolts, spring bolts, hasp and staples, wrought iron style latches, chain and a padlock and much more, you just need to think about what one will be best, a newer one on the market allows it to be opened and locked from both sides and it looks like a big wrought iron handle, its brand is lockinox, as for ideas have a search for "gates" on the forums search bar

if your gates are 5"6 -7ft long each leaf,the posts should be at least 8" square and at least 2ft 6" in the ground. if not and you have a solid flat drive put spring loaded jockey wheels on the gate to take the load of the hinges.then you can drill and chemfix your hinges straight into the wall,allso if you can weld then you can swan neck the post around the footing,also I've dealt with a lot of commercial ram raids on gates(spent every day repairing them)and found slide latches to be the strongest.have a look next time your on an industrial site,and reverse your top hinge to avoid them lifting them off.
