Building a gantry out of scrap ..

Right so,
I want a lifting gantry in my carport/work area and I'm also trying to use up my material pile.

Needs to be around 9ft wide,8ft high.

I have -
2 x 80x150mm 3m channel
6 x 75x75x4mm box 3m
1 x 75x3mm round tube 7m

Needs to be on wheels.

How would you do it?

I was thinking of welding and bolting the channel back to back to make one big I beam for the main lifting beam and welding two lengths of the box together for the uprights.

Depends how much you want to lift with it. I built one using 40 x 80 x 3mm box, uprights each side, one across the top, with a couple of short diagonals twixt uprights and cross beam. The uprights sat on a lower beam each side 1 metre long with a heavy duty castor wheel on each end.
And that easily lifted a small block Chevy motor, 600lbs.

American motor, so surely lb is an appropriate unit ?

Some of us remember and prefer to think in lbs & ozs, stones & tons, feet & inches, yards and miles, pints and gallons...

When Litres & Kgs, Km and mm etc were imposed on us by the all powerful and grand Eurotocracy I was 16 (52yrs ago) and have nearly got used to it...

Although it still annoys me seeing litres instead of gallons when I refuel, as they never dared change prices by more than 2p a gallon...

Sorry to digress... would love to see a gantry build...

Some pallet racking uprights and beams make for a great gantry. Light weight and can support 3 tons.

Just stitch weld, no bolting needed.

80X150 channel back to back would take some serious wieght i have a 75X120 beam across one part of my workshop its 4.8m long and i tested it with 1ton in the middle hardly flexed at all . For lifting engines out it doesnt get stressed at all

the channel has a 5mm web and 10mm flange.

If one on its own will be sufficient, mainly for engines so 500kg would be fine, then I could use the other length for the base.

How to make a trolley run on the single flange of qty (1) Channel ?

I would use scaffold tubes, cheap easy and rated for load if assembled correctly. A frames occasionally pop up on Market place and usually a used one can be had for less than the cost of materials

Why didn't I think of that for the JCB engine

Mind you the issue was moving the pallet racking once the engine was up or move something that weighs in at 5.5t out of the way on dirt...

Just need some more beams now.

Bah to that
The uprights will support around 12 tonnes a pair. Beams 3 tonnes a pair. I advise using 4 beams in total to be safe and spread the load evenly if you are lifting anything really heavy. For a car engine you will be very well within any limit.

4 beams will carry 6000kg.
Milling machine about 1100kg - no problem!
I wouldn't stand under it though
That racking looks pretty feeble though compared to British stuff - and I would put foot plates on it.
