I know what you mean about ripping them off i ripped the back box of my sierra the first week I had it as the wally I got it from had the car sitting in the weeds.

Will the lowest part be the chassis rails or diff/gearbox/sump?

Lowest point on the chassis is 5"
Engine sump is 4", hopefully just enough to clear a brick!

It's that what pin vices are for, besides Ive worked it out, it's cheaper to burn them down to 1.8995" and throw them

heres an update on the Corvette progress...

next job was to make up a small centre crossmember complete with front proploop.

did this before doing the trans crossmember as the amount of weld around here would pull and the xmember bolts then not fit
trans xmember made from 40x40 box with turned sleeves for 1/2" bolts.

mounted on 3/16" tabs.

after refitting the larger than stock th400 trans it's clear that it'll be tight between the shifter cable and the oversize exhaust,
you can see the notch where it's clearanced for headers in the past.

the solution...
to pie cut at the front the factory sections of channel that originally taper in and run them parallel.

each side moved out around 1-1/2"? and patch where previously cut for headers.

now both paralell but short of meeting the rest of the chassis.

new chassis 100mm deep, old 102mm
so even the repair sections not simple, another cut,weld, sand before welding in.

after sanding back the weld joints smooth at the join made a one piece 1/8" thick boxing plate and seam welded to the inside of both channel sections.

centre area looks pretty much complete now
