The better half has for some time wanted a Beetle, and the subject reared it's ugly head again the other night while watching telly. I'm not a big fan of them myself, but said if she could find a pre '72 one for right money I would restore it for her (knowing fully that you can't buy one for 'right money').

She's only gone and found a '68 one, for £200, dry stored for the last 15 years!

I've just been to have a look at it, and apart from a knackered clutch & tyres, it would probably pass an MOT! all paper work present, 2 owners from new, so I paid for it there and then.

Now I've got fix the damn thing over the summer!

A '68 Beetle for £200 is astonishing. I'm not a fan of them either (after owning the most unreliable rusty one ever in my younger years), but I would have it for that.

But then again, the fanbois probably don't 'get' the Alfisti either.

TBH, they're not so hard to spot nowadays!

It's from a friend of someone she works with. They got it with the house when they bought it, and wanted rid so they could put the car in the garage.

I actually felt a bit guilty handing over the £200, but the guy told me he was aware it was probably worth more, but as I was willing to take it as is and restore it he was happy with what he had asked for it. As far as he is concerned it's a rusty old car (brand new Lexus on the drive!)

It's a bit rusty here and there but no obvious holes, few dents etc., but complete. The engine turns over but it wouldn't start, not so fussed about that though.

when I pick it up, I'll post some pics.

I don't like them myself, I'm a Land Rover fanatic. But the significant other has always wanted one. My only concern was that it was tax exempt!

Someone offerred an E-Type Jag on Freecycle a couple of weeks ago. It was his late father's and "just cluttering the garage up."

Luckily several of us emailed him to put him wise.

I loved my " 1975 orange Kafer " HFL141 W " left hooker imported in 1980 from Germany by me. I had a 1303 s and bunged a 1705 bus engine in it having ground off some clutch bearing release bits. It went like the clappers .

The drain holes in the side panels and door get very blocked and as a result rust the panels through from the inside.

You can do an engine removal on less than 10 minutes without any collateral damage . oil change on a warm engine . apply and brake , put in gear , chock the front wheels ,jack up rear end to 2 foot 3 inches high and the drain plug is right by your nose ..... sooooo easy to sort .

Screen heaters are/should be hot after about 30 seconds even in minus 25 oC

They drive well in snow, bags of room almost passion wagon status as well as having space behind rear seat . So good for a young blade.

They last and last if looked after .
I sold mine in 1983 for much more than I paid for it.

BUT, I would much rather go for a Dolomite Sprint/Capri or Alfasud, back then

It would have started to rust way before then, breezer. They built them out of cheap Russian steel that had been lying about at the salt-ridden dockyards for ages! And then didn't finish or paint them properly

A mates dad managed an alfa garage, we had a traded in A reg sud off him in 1986, it had failed the mot due to rust!

That's what I thought at first, but he seems a genuine bloke and did post to say that he'd withdrawn it and will be having someone to look over it as he didn't realise its value.

I used to love my 1.5 Ti Alfasud and it was great for welding practise I never got the Beetle thing although I don't begrudge anyone else their taste. I mean, I drive a Kia Sportage now which was bought as a stop gap 2 years ago when we were stuck for a motor and it's still here.

I quite like Beetles and Alfas, despite their flaws, i can see the attraction in both. I also like Land rovers.

However, for a people's car you really can't beat a Morris Minor and for a performance car, with the engine in the front- has to be a 944 for me!
