Disagree there, a Stihl hedger blade will take a lot of abuse, theres a lot of people using them every day, boucing the blade off 40mm connifer and they last a reasonable while. The ones we used in rail were not well maintained or sharp, and it wasnt the gearboxes that let go.

I'd have to disagree with your disagreement. My name's been on the wall of shame a few times with regard longreach's. When you consider how much use they're getting, then yes, overall, they are relatively sturdy, but the cutter head on the Stihl's could do with being beefed up a bit.

Most failures if these are due to extreme abuse.

The boxes are strong and fit for the job. This is inside mine when I bought it used. I cleaned out the old grease and added correct qty of Stihl grease and will do that every year or two even with my limited use levels. Grease and maintenance is alot cheaper than replacement!

I don't abuse. I do, however, expect that my arms should be the weak spot, not the tool.

I use these, in fact I have 2, the one below for hedges and cutting branches and one with cow horn style handle bars for long rough grass, plus another few of their engine powered gardening tools.

Tip:- Grease the gearboxes once/twice a years and use Aspen fuel.....

got an established garden hedge id like to make a bit smaller , my elec clippers arent man enough

would a budget screwfix etc petrol clipper go though pencil size stalks with ease?

I have a Lidl petrol engine hedge trimmer. It has no problem cutting through tough stems greater than pencil size. It is heavy, but for occasional domestic use is just fine. I have about 60 metres of mixed hedges. I also use it for clearing rough banks.

my lidil special must be nearly 10 years old now n still working.....
I just screem it flat out all the time....never a prob with the thicker branches and even the occ fence wire....

Yep, mine cuts through stock net no problem.

I wonder if there replacement cylinder kits are any good as my ageing earth auger needs one, the amazon cyl kits are exceptionally poor quality, so may have to try it.

I am very tempted instead, to stick the 5-in-1 engine, on the auger, and get a clone Honda GX35 engine for the multi tool, as the 4T's are supposed to be very good.

I disagree, having stripped and worked on a couple of 4 mix engines and zero issues.

Any issues are caused by

A: using wrong oil
B: lack of maintenance including setting valve clearances.

The 4 mix engines are very powerful and reliable units.

The downsides of these engines is the weight and purchase price IMO.

But for the power they have, worth it for me.

Whatever you do, don't get a cordless Hitachi hedge trimmer (although I do have a little used one for sale . . .) - it will simply fold over even thin privet, never mind my hawthorn hedge.

Just got 30 -40m of hawthorn down to a height I'm happy with - took out all the big stuff with loppers, the rest with an electric Bosch hedgetrimmer. Biggest problem was/is getting rid of the trimmings now.

Don't underestimate how efficient a hand lopper & bow saw with a decent blade in it can be. A bow saw is faster than you may realise.

How big or tall is the hedge, got a photo?

It really just needs a very strong pull or you get sore hand and fingers. No problem once it fires.

Biggest problem was/is getting rid of the trimmings now.

Pile them and rash up small with a chainsaw, it will then rot/dry/burn much easier or, it will fit about 20x more in a green bin.
