i use it got a big bucket given
and fill the grease gun with it using a piece of stick spatula and rubber gloves

I hate grease guns, and grease.
Clearly a two man job with a manual greaser.

Its easy if the tub has the gun filling disc inside it, not so easy without. If you order in the grease in boxes they work out between £1.50- £2 a cartridge which isn't too bad.

I fill the gun cartridge from the pot....
was given a 1/2 size lever action pot...
only 1 vehicle to use it on now...bit of a waste but cost nowt..

Sounds a lot of mess in comparison to cartridges
If you have a good quality grease gun and decent cartridges. And replace any worn nipples then greasing is easy.

You can pull grease from the bucket by placing the grease-tube inside the grease, then pulling back the plunger, this works very well.
Keep a scraper next to the barrel, run it around the edge of the tube the a quick rag over. This is not particularly messy when care is taken.
Need to be careful about keeping the grease clean.

We used to get through 3 or 4 cartridges a week lubricating the barrel pump seals, used to scoop it out of the cartridge by hand so a bucket of grease would have been more practical.
Get yourself down to your local agricultural parts/supplies place and buy a box of 12-24.
From my point of view you switch to a battery grease gun to make your life easier, loading grease from a tub/bucket is just adding back some mess/misery for very little benefit.
If you are out on a job it's easy to have a couple of spares in the vehicle but you don't want to be carrying around a bucket full of the stuff.

Back in the day (and I’m not <that> old!) when I started helping my old man on machines we would fill everything from a tub or a bucket.
They all came with a filling disk.
I remember the old grease guns with a chain up the middle, not a solid rod. Easy to let go and fire grease everywhere and just an evil contraption!!
I only use buckets now on an air greaser I keep at a customers for doing his plant. It’s just less hard on my battery one. For everything else I just use the battery one with cartridges. As above, they’re under £2 each and don’t make a mess in my truck.
Also taste nice I think as my old Rottie would always try and nab them as a chew toy.

They are ok if the gun you have has the refilling/backfilling connection. Not many do these days.
