@Seadog Graham, we are watching the same sort of stuff it seems ! I saw that last week - amazing what they do with very limited facilities. Quite impressive really but not sure I'd trust that sort of repair for something critical.

I was surprised that they'd attempt it, Andrew. From the way it was machining I guess it must be steel, so surely it would have been nitrided originally?

Why? Nitriding hasn't been used for decades?

How do you know that @bR39Da ? If it's a diesel no one would know.
Depends how good he was at tapping the crank into line, how good he was at pressing it straight, and how close to tolerance he machined, then polished it.
How long it lasts before cracking is the question I'd like an answer to, but his work, in sandals, ring on finger and watch on wrist notwithstanding was impressive. We all know cracks start on the outside, so maybe this would last a fair while.
I think we're all too ready to rubbish stuff like this, but it works, to some degree at least.

It just shows how out of touch I am then. When we had a school tour around Dagenham I'm sure that was what they did to the cranks. (c1968 mind )

I just realized their secret.............. 150 wt. oil in the crankcase. Fixes the clearance problems.

What I like about these videos is shows what can be achieved with very basic tooling, no dro, no tipped tools, no clockgauges, no fancy tools posts. And it works. Often striving for perfection restricts many ofus from achieving anything
