Broken bike

Canti brakes? weird old things.
The earlier sticky out ones worked a treat, grabby but powerful, then they changed the design so they did not stick out and they did not work. Yours are the sticky out version. The later Low profile ones were a tragic joke.
Will you have a 17 mile commute? that is doable but it is nice to have a back up plan.
I can easily manage a ten mile round trip all week. When I move I will be looking at about 15, it is good for the head sole and body. You cant be miserable when cycling, at first it will kill you then gradually it becomes normal.
I stopped going 'Cycling' after a few months of this. My commute was enough. Now and again it is nice to go on a leisure ride though.

I've bought a new chain and decided to sell it on eBay, hopefully they'll leave feedback before it breaks again. I also need to fix the rear brake on my trials bike and that's going too. I'm going to spend some of the money on a grown-up's bike*, what do you all think of the Carrera Tanneri?

The problem with that bike is that the forks are aluminium too, I assume they are as no note is made about them. That will give an incredibly harsh ride. If you go with a aluminium frame you really need composite forks and probably seat post to take the harshness away.

Personally if I was you I would take advantage of the racing snobs who sell decent frames and forks on ebay for pennies because it's not the latest model anymore. Then you can add the kit you want to your taste, if you want a cross machine just make sure the frame you pick up has enough clearance for what ever tyres you want to run.

Really you can't be miserable when cycling.

Oh I can tell you so many times when I have been miserable.........

When it's so cold the air is burning your lungs that then gives you bronchitis.
When you have to make that huge long ride home in the dark and it's in the middle of a storm.
Drivers not giving a stuff, especially lorries.
Wind so hard you are nearly going backwards.
Full beams blinding you where there are no street lights in the dark - I snapped a frame going down a hill when a car decided to put it's lights on full beam and I couldn't see a thing. Particularly nasty crash.
The feeling of hitting tarmac at speed.

Saying all that can't wait to get the bikes out for the summer .

I went to Halfords to have a look at it today at it and decided dropped bars aren't nice...



...Then I saw the Carrera Sulcata, it's got bigger wheels, disc brakes, more gears and, IMO, looks nicer...


...So I bought it. Should be able to collect it in a couple of hours.

I think it's technically a mountain bike. There's a label on the forks that says not for jumping/freeride/downhill but essentially, yes, it's another jump bike.

That's what I thought but I daren't say it unless she decided to take my key away. I think her fear is because other road users can be tossers around bikes and the like though.

It's like a downhill bike calmed down and more usable on a varied terrain. A downhill bike would be more sturdier and stronger rims and less useful gears for anything other than downhill.

Thanks to this thread, I am now the proud owner of a very lightly used Gary Fisher "Paragon" mountain bike (hard tail) which I lusted for in the mid 90's (when it was 900 quid!).

For the princely sum of 80 english pounds!

Update;
I sold the broken jump bike "as seen" for £125 after eBay fees and he even left positive feedback.
Then I was messing around on the new bike in a field and snapped the derailleur hanger which somehow pulled the back wheel off. Luckily I was barely moving at the time so I was fine but as by this point I had decided that I had been an idiot and I should have gotten a road bike mum went in there and made a big fuss about how it was dangerous blah blah blah... They accepted it back and I got my money back on a gift card (It was over 28 days so it couldn't be cash). Now I've bought this;

Much more suitable for 90 percent of the riding I do, my only complaint is those bloody straps on the pedals but I've got some platform pedals I can swap them with.
I've got to make some kind of bike rack/stand/hanger to keep the shed more organised now.

Nice little thing, glad it worked out for you.

Toe straps are OK but can be dangerous in crash situations because your feet are tied in - slow to get in and out of. Platform pedals are for girls

Get some SPD's, it you get mountain bike ones you will be able to use SPD shoes you can walk in. SPD's will make a huge difference in getting power down compared with platforms.
