They are practical! I ride mine to the shops, I do a ten mile commute on it. it is a vehicle.

well sad to say with you trying to use a hammer you have most prob wedged it on more.
the removers come with a little piece to make the bolt larder for the cranks with a larger bolts. to stop the bolt going into the bb axel threads.

if you want to save the crank i feel you are going to need heat. but saying that if it is wedged on normally i would cut and replace... as you can get some interesting cranks on the cheep.
but by the sounds of it you have got a bmx styal 2 piece cranks. for any dj bike i would allways have a 3 piece as it is easer to work on and normally cheeper to keep running. (and i am getting rid of some too)

the chain thing.. i had a time when i went through a chain every 3 months. but i did change the rear sprocket and get the front measured. it is just a thing of using the bike hard. if you want to get more life out of it, try Ti casset and chain rings as i have found if they do not wear as much the chain lasts longer

I've bought a new chain and decided to sell it on eBay, hopefully they'll leave feedback before it breaks again. I also need to fix the rear brake on my trials bike and that's going too. I'm going to spend some of the money on a grown-up's bike*, what do you all think of the Carrera Tanneri?

Cross bikes are becoming more and more popular as our roads deteriorate.
That looks ok, but I am a bit of a bike snob, no not snob fiend and I prefer a nice steel frame; I also like nice bikes, but I do use them. Which means pricy. Cheapo steel frames are gruesome things, decent ones give a lovely ride.
I am planning on getting myself one when I have moved to Wales. I will have a fifteen mile commute on rural lanes, the kind of thing that wrecks road bikes in no time.

Why do you prefer steel frames?

As a loosely related note, a neighbor saw me using my lathe the other day and told me he's part of an engineering shop in Haverhill. He said he can get me some offcuts to turn and he also suggested I give him my details to pass on to his bosses because they're always interested in getting apprentices. Haverhill is about seventeen miles from me and if I were to get a job there then I could be cycling there and back each day.

A decent steel frame has a degree of springiness and feels nicer than a dead aluminium frame. Cheap steel frames are made of pipes, high end ones are made of fairies pubic hair or something like that.
Hard to explain.
But this costs a bomb. My antique Kona mountain bike cost about £1800 in 1996, no suspension or anything and brakes that barely worked.
The frame is triple butted heat treated after welding, hand brazed at the rear as the tubes are so fine, wall thickness is about .06mm in the middle.
I blagged the frame for free though.

There's no way I could have anything that fancy, £300 is my limit and I don't want to buy used again.

What are cantilever brakes like, verses other types? For reference, I'm used to hydraulic brakes which are sharp as a lightsaber.

Mum thinks mopeds are too dangerous and won't let me get one. I'm not too bothered though because I've always thought they're like motorbikes for pussies.
I don't know if I could ride that far every day, I'd probably do it for a week then give up and find another way there.
