And these holes are part of the history of the wagon, they were made so it could be slung off the bogies and sold.

i would advise t bars at the support sections something you can really weld at those points

they would be there more as stopping the structure seperating again and they would be a good strong point in doing so

It's going to have nine tie bars, each 8mm thick, and 80mm deep so that's easily 18+ inches of weld. That's not going to separate ever again.

id use 5mm angle iron pointed up or down or 5mm x 2" flat flat plate as you look like your fitting wood below the floor level if you are fit downwards

weld the first angle iron to each side which will give you 5mm x 2" width then weld another angle iron at side of it so you wil have 5mm x 4" and that would be much better

then just spot weld at different points along its length

as you only need it at the uprights 100mm would keep the 4 uprights square and also stop the pull out better as you can get a good solid weld at those points

I've a bit more welding to do in this half, weather permitting on Monday. Tomorrow I hope to move it closer to its new home. But it would be nice to do some painting this week.

The interior has been designed. Several times, and several more to come, I suspect.

There will be a substantial railway theme, with a bit of industrial engineering thrown in.
