Going to be some big problems this winter IF we get a typical area of high pressure over Northern Europe like we often do. Those bright frosty days with no wind. Can last as long as 10 to 14 days.
Britain is starting to rely far too heavily on inter connectors. Norway has been making a fortune out of us - selling us electricity at sky high prices. A few years ago I had the misfortune of staying in an hotel in Kensington. Far too hot in the room. Aircon did nothing. This was in Feb. Window wouldn't open. They moved us to a nicer room with a window that would open a few inches. Still couldn't sleep. Somewhere nearby was a gas turbine generator. Damn thing was spooling up and down all night long.Too late

We have fusion reactors! The problem is just that they use more energy than they produce currently.
Fusion is even safer too - fusion reactions aren't self-sustaining and so can't 'run away', meltdown, the usual nuclear horror stories.

Ramping gas turbines up and down isnt good for them, far happier running constantly, with sensible load changes. A 25MW RB211 doesnt half make some unhappy noises if you shed 20 MW demand in one go for any reason.
A steam turbine is far more sensible for big power generation.
Of course it is - nice big heavy spinney things - masses of inertia. I never realised until fairly recently that even 3 phase machines such as lathes or milling machines help contribute to grid stability. Perhaps they should offer a forum subsidy for us to use our machines more often
