Electricity 24/7 at currently any cost ?There are loads of these around the country making a fortune sitting idle ready to ramp up when the wind doesn't blow![]()

One was being run up just then.Ive been intimate over the years with many such things, Wartzillas, B and Ws, MAN, Sulzers. The noise of those types of engines when your in between a pair of them on full chat is quite painful.
But running full chat 24/7 runs up the service and maintenance budgets, being slow and very labour intensive. A spiny thing either steam or gas requires far less input during its life cycle.

Yes exactly.Electricity 24/7 at currently any cost ?

A few years ago I had the misfortune of staying in an hotel in Kensington. Far too hot in the room. Aircon did nothing. This was in Feb. Window wouldn't open. They moved us to a nicer room with a window that would open a few inches. Still couldn't sleep. Somewhere nearby was a gas turbine generator. Damn thing was spooling up and down all night long.Too late

The commissioning engineer was there so I got talking to him, I think he got bored after 5 minutes and wondered off when someone else come over![]()
And you are planning to last HOW LONG ?
I hope they are capturing and using that waste heat? They are welcome to stick one in my warehouse - or an SMR

The first FPSO I was on had 8 eight 6.5MW, dual-fuel Wartsila 32 diesel engines, providing a total power output of 52MW, noisy blooming thing when it was full whack.Too late

Ramping gas turbines up and down isnt good for them, far happier running constantly, with sensible load changes. A 25MW RB211 doesnt half make some unhappy noises if you shed 20 MW demand in one go for any reason.A few years ago I had the misfortune of staying in an hotel in Kensington. Far too hot in the room. Of course it is - nice big heavy spinney things - masses of inertia. I never realised until fairly recently that even 3 phase machines such as lathes or milling machines help contribute to grid stability. Perhaps they should offer a forum subsidy for us to use our machines more oftenThe first FPSO I was on had 8 eight 6.5MW, dual-fuel Wartsila 32 diesel engines, providing a total power output of 52MW, noisy blooming thing when it was full whack.

A steam turbine is far more sensible for big power generation.

And dogged by NIMBYs.Just hope it doesn't follow the trend of most British infrastructure projects, massively over budget and late delivery.
Bad welding? One thing I really hope to see in my lifetime is cracking fusion reactors.
