I know someone who had a tour around it, half way around his radiation detection badge went off, the guy showing him round said "it's ok just ignore it, it's always a bit leaky around this bit"

It’s a repeat, but well worth a watch. I like Jim Al Khaleli he’s down some great science docs.

I’ve done a few little jobs there, but I’ve mainly worked at the sister site near Preston. (For Simpsons fans it’s called Springfields which always makes me chuckle!).

It’s quite fascinating the history behind the site and the legacy they are still dealing with. It was only about 10 years ago I was working on a process to safely manage barrels of waste that had been sat in storage since the 60’s.

Yep , I used to live there ,, well just up the road ,, I was always told Chapel Cross is where they made clouds too.

I think there was a more recent prog (perhaps Michael Portillo?) on TV made about Sellafield and that region. That was interesting as it showed the inside of the new Training Centre for the Nuclear Police force who guard not only that site, but several others. They have the biggest stock of plutonium in the World. It looked like lots of money was spent on the training centre and the guys (ex-army?) all looked like they could have joined the SAS just as easily.

The UK was incredibly lucky that the outcome of the 1957 fire was not far worse than it actually was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windscale_fire. Under slightly different circumstances, we might still be dealing the consequences now.

Met a girl at uni who went off to work in the nuclear industry.

Shocked to learn she died from cancer just a few years later.

I'm sure it was just a coincidence...

My best mate worked there after uni. We all went to see him one weekend, and took the bus tour around the place. We kept pointing at buildings and asking him "Is that where they make the tritium?"
