Does anyone know the official terminology for the few B&S engines that are primarily a vertical crankshaft (i.e. drive a rotary mower blade beneath the deck) but have a side shaft/aux shaft/PTO (whatever you want to call it) that drives a horizontal shaft to the side to run a belt? I want to try and find a good second hand one but no searches seem to bring them up. I have one on a mower and another on a power scythe so they are out there but I dont know what to search for to find them.

The only issue I am aware of is the lower crank shaft seal is tired/ leaks oil slowly. Good used condition.

I just googled Briggs and Stratton with PTO and got those two. Maybe they don't make them now.

Think you miss my point Gaz. One engine, two drive shafts - one vertical (in my case the crank) and one horizontal (in my case a pto to drive a separate belt)

Every Briggs powered thing ive had has been a POS and have generally replaced them with Hondas , just start and run smoother. Last one was my Karcher pressure washer drive flange that bolted to frame exactly the same as a vertical mower engine just needed to change the flywheel

I used to sell them. Everything I have is now on a genuine Honda engine. Quieter, smoother, and ALWAYS start first or second pull, no matter how long they are left.
If Reb78 looks on the cowling or plastic fuel tank adjacent to the spark plug, you will see Model , type, and code. A load of numbers. quote this to a supplier and they will be able to supply a replacement, or cross reference it. I would NOT waste any money on a pre "enjoyed" Briggs & Stratton engine.
I must admit I have never had much satisfaction, other than a load of frustration and grief with Briggs & Stratton engines..... but I wonder why?

I have some that outdate me - so getting on for 50-55 years old, that still run. Others have given up the ghost early. But my machines get a bit of a battering in garden/fields and often work harder than they were ever meant to!
