I would do everything that needs doing to get it going first, then sort the table last, if you're going to. If the table turns out to be unrecoverable you can buy a replacement but if ther are any other mechanical gremlins there's no point spending money on the last bit yet.
My thinking is that the table is the one thing that really stands out as being completely borked. So if I spend a very reasonable £140 tarting it up, even if I do just end up selling it on, it will look a LOT better. It also appears to be the main culprit regarding its potential as a viable machine. Knee looks ok, saddle looks ok and I can get to both of them quite easily without too much more disassembly. So it's really only the head that is unknown and weather permitting, I can take a look at that tomorrow.
The table feed nut pulling out of its housing is a worry but now the bed is off, I should be able to see what's up with that too.

Anymore piccy's of the finished article Screwdriver ?
A great result. I doubt you could buy a beaten-up bed for that money.
So they ground the top and left the ways alone? Can't see much point grinding a thou over 4 foot.
but I haven't been able to investigate in this weather. It's still stood outside under various covers.
I still have to find out whats going on with the lead screw and lead screw nut(s). They shouldn't just pull out of the nut holder but they just did! Probably no more than a fixing screw but I haven't been able to investigate in this weather. It's still stood outside under various covers.

Yes, just the top surface which had a big step at each end (20 thou) where someone had used a flycutter to make a wonky flat surface in the middle.
If I had had the bottom of the bed re-ground, I would also need to have the gib ground and that is a very odd shape; basically a wedge but with compound angles so that sliding it into the cross slide, tightens up the play. Of course if you grind the dovetails in the bed and the gib, you also have to re-grind the cross slide ways! That costs so much you would be better off having the entire machine re-ground. That's "only" £1250" which is a pretty good price but is way more spare cash that I don't have so I took a gamble on the bed being ok- and it was.
