Breakdown Recovery

I stopped dealing with them when they refused to turn out to 'indoors, on her own with a flat battery in a SWB Transit. "Too big, we don't cover them". It was news to me, but even so, the size of it was irrelevant to a jump start. Now we use the breakdown service offerred free with the vehicle insurance through RH. Never had a problem, even with a French breakdown or the bike with a puncture.

Stopped dealing with them for similar reasons. Had a 'family policy' covering all members of the household.

No 2 son had debris pierce the radiator of his MX-5 on the motorway.

Refused to turn out as in their terminology that is a Road Traffic Collision and not covered.

Should have left when they 'de-mutualised' but all the sale proceeds went to management not the members who actually 'owned' it!

What’s the excess on the phones? I’m sure when I looked into this it wasn’t worth using as a local shop can do it cheaper

£25 excess for normal mobiles.
£50 excess for Apple things.

No local little man at the time, but we have one now, both on the high street and at the local Sunday flea market. She got a new phone for £25.

Just learned you also get 3 years extended warranty on electrical items bought on the credit card. Haven't read all the fine print.
Also there are no extra charges for using the credit card overseas, so we keep that account for holidays too.

As I had to consult the documentation:

Roadside assistance, local recovery and hire car or bus/train/plane/accommodation is for UK and Europe.
Europe is everywhere from Albania to Ukraine, even Russia and Iceland, but not Greenland.
Relief driver if you cannot drive etc.
Recovery of the vehicle and passengers to 'home' is UK only

Vehicle is up to 7.0 metres long, 2.3 metres wide, 3.0 metres high, less than 3.5 tonnes fully laden (GVM?). No stated limit to number of seats but only covers a maximum of 7 passengers plus driver.

Includes caravans and trailers not more than 8.0 metres long including the drawbar.

Phew - that was hard work!

commercial vehicles of all types
vans
pickups
any vehicle used for hire and reward such as taxis.

That's weird, their website clearly states any vehicle/van up to 3.5 GW. The only size restriction listed is 8ft 3in wide but I have found a reference that says maximum length of 5.5m. None of the above would apply to a SWB Transit unless it had some unusual weight rating.

It took me by surprise too. It was a member cover rather than vehicle cover, I assume that was the issue?

Autoaid cover vans and campervans up to 3.5T, I checked out of curiosity and not wanting to find out the hard way.

Autoaid are one of the ones that only cover small trailers.

No. We have just taken out vehicle only cover on the new Transit Custom we have (£45 roadside only) . Any driver but only on that specified reg. Funny how it isn't "too big" though now!

coming from someone who has worked in the industry and worked for a company that subs out to all the big names (AA, RAC, GREENFLAG, FMG, POLICE, HIGHWAYS AGENCY), they are all as bad as each other and to be honest id go for the cheapest that state full uk coverage and onward journey cover...this means if they can fix it at the roadside they will, if they cant they either take you home or to the destination you were heading to anyway, or to a garage of your choice if you are 400 miles form home and need it fixed there and then...and expect for the recovery to be done by a different firm as the AA, RAC and greenflag cant cope with the demand...

yes they will, but will likely sub the job out to another firm with a 12t tilt and slide flatbed, was my bread and butter subbing out to AA, RAC and Greenflag when i was on light vehicle recovery

mines going to conk sooner or later its making a right noise changed the front wheel; bearing right hand drive shaft and gearbox and its still not spending anymore on it till it gives up and then see wot it is even though it could be the left hand side jack it up and no noise atall when turning the wheels its speed related final drive and only does it under load

when it goes just dont tell them youve done work to it yourself or had work done to to it...play dumb and pretend you dont know much about vehicles when you call it in...when the recovery driver turns up tell him what he needs to know as he isnt going to care what you have done to it...but most providers will probably try and worm their way out of paying for recovery if they think they can

one of the better policies to have...NFU were always easy to work for and customers were alwayshappy to see me...some AA customers were not so happy for various reasons...

There is not a lot of road driving to be done in Greenland

There is not a great deal of road driving to be done in Greenland - at least while the ice cap is still holding out ;-)

We went on a sea kayaking expedition there quite a few years ago - interesting place!

Depends on your vehicle, if it's over 10 (I think) years you need specific vehicle cover (reg on the card), maybe a similar issue with some of the vans turning out not to be covered.

Having said that though, I had a personal policy with them some years ago and they turned out to and fixed a mates Iveco van, it was a 3.5t gross but physically massive.

The nationwide have recovered my camper twice in 4 years.
So that's a bit odd.
