I find it interesting that people are quick to jump on the American's for ruining the English language when often they have retained older English spellings and phraseology and it's us that have changed them particularly past participles eg gotten (from Norse).Middle English pinched it from Norman French "souder", which nicked it from the latin "solidare" (to make as one).
Modern French remains "souder".
