I am looking to repair steel expansion chambers from a motorcycle (RD/RZ350ypvs for those interested) and am looking for some ideas as to the best way to go about it. New pipes are hard to come by so I have to work with what I have. The pipes will ultimately be coated in a black ceramic finish so it doesnt have to look too pretty, it just has to end up with no holes and a fairly smooth finish.
The pipes have some deep pitted corrosion and a couple of small holes in some areas, (as per pics) they are still overall structurally strong though. I have tried MIG welding areas with my Supermig 195 and the basic wire it came with but as the steel is very thin (and I am not a very proficient welder) I think I am going to make things worse instead of better. Also I cant easily get anything inside the pipes to disepate the heat.
I wondered if anyone can suggest another way of repairing these areas ? I dont really want to plate over them as this will look like an obvious repair, this is more of a restoration than a patch up.
I read on the net about someone who brazed a 'filler skin' over bad areas in a manifold and thought that that might be a good technique for this, however I have no experience of brazing and wondered exactly what equipment and rods etc. I would need to purchase to do it.
I have a propane blow torch (thats probably not hot enough) and could purchase some brazing rods if thats the right way to go. I also read that I can get brazing wire for the MIG but that looks pricey and I read I would need pure Argon to do it, I have Argoshield Light at the moment.
I like the sound of the brazing rods as there might be less chance of me creating any new holes in the steel, any suggestions would be appreciated.
