Brazing kit advice

Hi,
i would like some advice on buying a small barazing kit, something like this

I wont be repairing cars etc so do not need something big and powerful. At the moment, i just want to braze a piece of steel plate about 1mm think to some steel tube, an inch and a half diameter and again about 1mm thick.

Could you give me some advice on a kit for doing this and then a kit for doing someting the next size up?

then you would just need a propane cylinder (calour type) and a oxygen (Hobbyweld or similar)
when you compare the price of the industrial set up as linked compared to the eBay deal, the only difference is the gas. But you get very usable kit instead of something with a very limited use.

Hi Dirk,
Don't buy either. The torch in plumbcentre kit will give too broad a flame, the gas in the ebay kit will last around 10 minutes. Could you not borrow an oxy kit from someone? Or hire it?

The method of attaching the tube to the sheet will be fillet brazing so you need a flame that's very focused. If the flame is too broad the bronze filler will flood over the place. You'll also need some good flux. Cycle Design make some great stuff called LFB (low fumeng bronze) that you can wash off with hot water. Ceeway in the UK sell it.

This kind of joint is very common on lugless bicycles.

I looked into this a while back as a general purpose set up as something to have rather than something that was absolutely needed. I'm a hobbyist with a home workshop. In the end I settled for an oxy propane setup with a conventional brazing torch and few different sized nozzles. It does everything I need and was a fraction of the price of the real deal. Don't go with the small disposable type bottles as they don't last for any useful amount of time

thank you for the info.i went to the link but did not understand what i was looking at. i could have someone do it for me but if there is a next time then i'm paying again and again. in part having the kit gives me the fun of making or reapairng something myself and the convenience as i can do it when i want. not sure it will save me money but then dont want the kit to be silly money either. i dont think i realised how mach a sulitable kit would be. dirk pitt

Any propane cylinder with a standard thread valve, lots of options depending on storage space.
I would use a 19kg cylinder but you could use 3.9kg, 6kg, 13Kg or even 47Kg

Its a safe process if you take care and apply a good dose of common sense.

They are lots of option and suppliers of cylinders, what you end up with might all depend on you location.

Hi Fella, I didnt buy a kit. I had two stage propane reg kicking around and half a torch. I shopped around on eBay for the best deals on a couple of blow pipes in different sizes, an oxygen reg, flash back arresters and hose. I think the whole lot came to less than 90 quid from various different suppliers

I think the cost is going to be too much. Up to about a £100 I think I could have managed but more then that, on top of the money already paid out on this project is getting a bit much.

Thank you for all the advice and the welcome. I'm a bit disappointed as I really thought, I could get a kit for £100 but I have to draw the line somewhere. I'll pop down tomorrow to a local engineering place to see how much they will charge to weld the plate and pipe. If its more then £10 - £15 I may have to rethink the long term costs
